So, I probably only noticed this because I've been reading a story chock full of munchkinry and rules abusing, but the phrasing of Arcane Versatility reads "a magician can cast a spell he has not prepared from his spellbook". Technically, he also didn't prepare all the spells that aren't even in his spellbook. I don't think it is supposed to allow you to cast spells you've never even encountered though.
