Animal of the Sea

An animal of the sea can swim and also breathes water.

Animals with this template are either called "animals of the sea" or "sea animals", where the word "animal" is replaced by the name of the animal, such as "tyrannosaurs of the sea" or "sea tyrannosaurs".

Animals of the sea typically dwell in or around bodies of water. Since their land speeds are hampered, they prefer to utilize water to their advantage.

Such animals appear slicker and more streamlined than their terrestrial counterparts with their limbs and physique modified for the change in environment.

Creating an Animal of the Sea

Animal of the sea is an inherited template applied to animals. Applying it to animals that already have a swim speed is strange and redundant, but if you want them to be able to breathe water, that works.

Template Traits

  • Aquatic: An animal of the sea gains the aquatic subtype.
  • Speeds: The base animal's land speed, burrow speed, climb speed and fly speeds are reduced by half (minimum of 5 feet or 10 feet for flying), rounding down to the nearest five-foot increment. Any flight maneuverability is reduced by 1 step if the animal can fly. The base animal gains a swim speed equal to its previous highest base speed.
  • Amphibious (Ex): An animal of the sea can breathe both water and air and can survive indefinitely on land.
  • Skills: Any of the base animal's racial skill bonuses to Climb and Jump are halved. The creature gains a +8 racial bonus on Swim checks and may always take 10 on this skill. This racial bonus overlaps with any existing racial bonus for this skill. Swim becomes a class skill for all its HD. An animal of the sea may use its Dexterity modifier in place of its Strength modifier.

Chickluck (Ex) A chickfowl is a lucky animal, getting out of a lot of bad scrapes. It may reroll any attack roll, saving throw, skill or ability check once, but at a −4 penalty, taking the second result. It may only use this ability once per round.
Feather Fall (Ex) A chickfowl flaps its small wings as it falls. So long as it is conscious and able, a chickfowl never takes fall damage from any height.
Improved Uncanny Dodge (Ex) A chickfowl is surprisingly alert and nimble. It retains its Dexterity bonus to AC even when caught flat-footed (but not when immobilized) and can't be flanked. This defense denies a rogue the ability to sneak attack a chickfowl by flanking it, unless the attacker has at least four more rogue levels than the target has HD.
