If you expend a 5th level spell or higher the damage double. If you expend a 7th level slot you may deliver it as a 60-ft cone or a 120-ft line, making an attack against every creature in the area. If you expend a 9th level slot the damage becomes 1d8 per caster level and you may deliver it as a 10-ft wide 240-ft line which lasts 1 round, making an attack against every creature in the area or who enter the area later.
