At Bay

At Bay is a status effect which reflects cautious fear. A creature can be At Bay from a specific source, such as a creature, all hostile creatures, an area, or even a more open-ended thing such as bodies of water or flames.

The creature who is At Bay suffers from the following conditions:

  • Whenever an At Bay creature attacks the source of its fear in melee, it must fight defensively. Additionally abilities which reduce the penalties from fighting defensively have no effect while At Bay.
  • An At Bay Creature moves at half speed whenever it moves in the direction of the source of its fear.
  • If an At Bay creature is cornered, it can take actions normally at no penalties.

If a creature is At Bay from an area, it moves at half speed while inside the area and constantly takes penalties as if it were Shaken. The creature can move at its normal speed if it attempts to flee or exit the area.

The penalties for being At Bay stack with any other fear penalty. This status effect works best with Revised Fear Effects.
