Damage (Small): 1d6
Damage (Medium)1: 1d8
Critical: 20/x3

1. See Damage Increases by Size to calculate the damage for a weapon larger than Medium or smaller than Small.
2. Weight figures are for Medium weapons. A Small weapon weighs half as much, and a Large weapon weighs twice as much.
3. When two types are given, the weapon is both types if the entry specifies "and", either type (player's choice at time of attack) if the entry specifies "or", or each end of the double weapon is a different type if the entry specifies "/".
4. The hp value given is for Medium armor, weapons, and shields. Divide by 2 for each size category of the item smaller than Medium, or multiply it by 2 for each size category larger than Medium.

This longspear is unusually well balanced and may be used as a one-handed weapon as well as a two-handed weapon, enabling creatures to use a shield and spear at the same time. It may be used as a simple weapon, and shares proficiency and interactions with feats as if it were a longspear. However, those that have Exotic Weapon Proficiency unlock the true potential of the spear. Those with proficiency may use it against adjacent squares as well as squares out to their extended reach. They also gain the following tactical abilities:

  • Charging Cleave: If you make a charge attack and successfully down an opponent, you can choose to keep running up to double your movement speed and continue to make attack rolls against creatures in your path until you either run out of movement or fail to bring down a creature.
  • Doubletap: As part of a full attack action, you may make an opposed Strength check. If successful, you can choose to knock your opponent back 5 ft with every successful attack you make, and you may also choose to advance 5 ft forward each time you make a successful attack. If three or more attacks hit, your opponent is staggered for 1 round.
  • Lunging Strike: You may make an attack as a standard action with +10ft additional reach. You do not threaten out to this area.
  • Short Haft: In this stance, you can choose to do bludgeoning damage by swinging the spear around as a quarterstaff. This form of attack is two-handed only and doesn't have reach, but it becomes a double weapon. The other end of the double weapon form of this weapon has the same enhancement as the sharper tip (where applicable), making it cheaper to enhance than a typical quarterstaff. It also counts as a quarterstaff for the purposes of feats and interactions in this state. This weapon can benefit from both metal and wood materials, with the Short Haft stance benefiting from the wooden materials.

This weapon is extraordinarily well balanced and grants a +2 circumstance bonus on Balance checks while wielding it.

A balanced spear has reach. You can strike opponents 10 feet away with it, but may also attack anu adjacent foes, unlike normal reach weapons. If you use a ready action to set a balanced spear against a charge, you deal double damage on a successful hit against a charging character.

The balanced spear counts as a lance for the purposes of interacting with feats such as Spirited Charge.
