Bee Dragon[edit]

The Bee Dragon is the (hopefully because this is my first time) balanced class version of a wonderful monster created by Eiji-Kun.

Making a Bee Dragon[edit]

Bee Dragons are dextrous and charismatic, but they lack a bit of the toughness that other dragons might sport... They prefer to either let their allies take the beating while they support, or attack from above.

Abilities: Dexterity is needed to make the Bee Dragon a little more capable of dodging in combat. While Charisma fuels its spells/abilities/spell-like abilities.

Races: See Alignment

Alignment: Any

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Bee Dragon.

Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Bee Dragons are proficient with all simple weapons.

Spells: A Bee Dragon casts arcane spells as a sorcerer of his level -10

Control Bees (Su): A Bee Dragon may rebuke and control flying vermin, typically bee swarms and giant wasps, as a cleric of its character level.

Create Honey/Wax (Ex): The Bee Dragon can create honey and wax naturally, as much as one entire beehive during one day of a honey flow per 5 levels (min 1) per day. At 10th level, the honey has a unique special property of concealing any object encased fully in it from divination, as if obscure object with a caster level of the Bee Dragon's level had been cast on it. This unusual property fades after 1 day when removed from the bee dragon's lair. Otherwise, it has no unusual properties.

Poison (Ex): A Bee Dragon gains a poison which causes itchiness, redness, and swelling. 1d4 Con/Staggered for 1 minute. The DC is Constitution based. The Bee Dragon can only inflict one dose of this poison per level. At 14th and every two levels after the amount of doses per level doubles to a maximum of 144 doses at level 20.

Breath Weapon (Su): The Bee Dragon has a deadly breath weapon, a cone of bees (with a radius of 5 * 1/2 level, min 5)!!! It deals the listed damage above as magic piercing damage and inflicts poison as if struck by its poison sting. A successful Reflex save halves the damage, and a Fortitude save negates the poison. It may breathe once every 1d4 rounds.

Sting (Ex): At 2nd level a Bee Dragon gains a sting attack which deals damage appropriate for its size (1d4 small, 1d6 med, etc.)

Flight of the Bumblebee (Ex): At 3rd level the Bee Dragon grows short insect wings that can be used to fly at 60 ft speed with average maneuverability, but only for a few seconds at a time, so if he ends his turn in the air he instantly falls. At 5th level the Bee Dragon can fly at 60 ft with average maneuverability all the time without problem.

Sting Dart (Sp): At 4th Level the Bee Dragon obtains the ability to cast Sting Dart 3/day Sting Dart

Scent (Su): At 5th Level a Bee Dragon gets Scent

Supernatural Venom (Su): At 6th level, a Bee Dragon's venom becomes impossibly toxic. It can work on beings immune to poison, though they gain a +8 bonus on saves. For beings not immune to poison, it is worse, as the poison does not abate after 1 minute, but continues to repeat the two poison effects every minute beyond until a successful Fortitude save is made.

Speech of the Queen: The Bee Dragon can communicate with vermin as if they were capable of communicating in a language he understands. He can likewise communicate with any creature that probably should have been classified as a vermin, subject to the DM's whim. He is fully able to speak to and understand a Hellwasp Swarm, a Phase Spider, or a Gelugon, for example. With respect to such creatures, the Bee Dragon can use his ranks in Handle Animal or Diplomacy to influence their opinion.

Honey Ambrosia (Sp): At 8th Level the Bee Dragon obtains the ability to cast Honey Ambrosia 3/day Honey Ambrosia Drone (Ex): As a full-round action a number of times per day equal to his HD, a Bee Dragon can beat its wings to create a droning buzz in a 60-foot spread. Each creature in the area must make a Will save (DC 10+1/2HD+Con mod) or fall asleep as a Sleep spell. There is no HD limit for this effect. Bee Dragon are immune to their own drone attacks as well as those of other Bee Dragons. With one week of intensive training consisting of submitting an ally to weakened versions of Drone, a Bee Dragon can turn other creature immune to his personal Drone attack, but not that of other Bee Dragons.

Damage Reduction (Ex): At 10th level, a Bee Dragon gains Damage Reduction 5/magic, this increases to 10/magic at 15th level and 15/magic at 19th level.

Spell Resistance (Ex):' At 12th level, a Bee Dragon gains Spell Resistance equal to 10 + 1/2 level

Swarm Thermoball (Sp): At 13th level the Bee Dragon obtains the ability to cast Swarm Thermoball 3/day Swarm Thermoball

Healing Honey (Su): At 14th level the Bee Dragon unlocks a secret about his honey, for every beehives worth of honey that the Bee Dragon can make in one day he can cast cure serious wounds, but the recipient of the spell has their wounds (or the areas where there were wounds before the casting) are covered in delicious honey to prevent disease.

Immunity to Swarms (Ex):'At 15th level, a Bee Dragon is immune to the attacks and effects of any swarm, including the effect of Crown of Vermin.

Breath Modulation (Ex):'At 17th level, a Bee Dragon can change his breath weapon to a line twice as long as the cone it was before.

Hivecraft (Sp): At 18th level the Bee Dragon obtains the ability to cast Hivecraft 1/day Hivecraft

Hive Mind (Su): At 20th level a Bee Dragon creates a special link with flying vermin. They gain telepathy out to 100 ft which can communicate and command flying vermin. Mindless flying vermin follow orders without question, while intelligent flying vermin can decide to obey or not.

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing a Bee Dragon[edit]

Religion: Bee Dragons are not inherently religious, but individuals have been known to be quite pious.

Other Classes: Bee Dragons act as a flying blaster, buzzing the enemies with their sting and breath weapons. This hit-and-run tactic does not sit well with some of the other more tanky classes, but other than that they get along with most others.

Combat: Bee Dragons act as a flying blaster, buzzing the enemies with their sting and breath weapons.

Advancement: Bee Dragons usually don't multiclass until 20th level, but other than that they could multiclass into anything that would increase their spellcasting, particularly Lurkers in the Swarm.

Bee Dragons in the World[edit]

The buzzing is an infinite symphony which I cannot share with the uninitiated! -C.D.E. Famous Bee Dragon

Rare Beekeeping dragon touched beings

Daily Life: These noble creatures live lives, not unlike a normal beekeeper, with a few exceptions, such as being able to converse with their bees. As well as having the ability to feed their hives in times of dirth.

Notables: C.D.E. Scourge of the dreaded varroa destructor mite.

Organizations: These beings sometimes congregate in tropical peninsulas in something called a Bee College.

NPC Reactions: They are treated as normal beekeepers until they are in a fight, after such an occurrence it is obvious that they are something more.

Bee Dragon Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge (Nature) can research Bee Dragons to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge (Nature)
DC Result
5 Bee Dragons are those who take the properties of bee dragons upon themselves.
10 Bee Dragons can inject a horrifyingly painful poison into you with their stings.
15 Bee Dragon honey is not only valued for its healing properties, but each Bee Dragon has its own flavor that it creates.
20 You can know about specific Bee Dragons.
