A typical big owl, occasionally called the dire owl, stands about 8 feet tall and has a wingspan of up to 20 feet. They are easy to mistake for their intelligent, magical cousins, the giant owl.

Combat[edit]

A big owl attacks by ambushing prey while flying. Among multiple targets, it will try to pick off one and fly away with it. It uses its claws together when attacking, counting them as a two-handed weapon for damage.

Superior Low-Light Vision (Ex): A big owl can see five times as far as a human can in dim light.

Skills: Big owls have a +6 racial bonus on Listen checks Move Silently checks and on Spot checks. When in flight, it gains an additional +6 bonus on Move Silently checks and doesn't take a penalty for moving at full speed, diving or charging.

Training a Big Owl[edit]

A big owl requires training before it can bear a rider in combat.

Training a big owl requires six weeks of work and a DC 20 Handle Animal check. Riding a big owl requires an exotic saddle. A big owl can fight while carrying a rider, but the rider cannot also attack unless he or she succeeds on a Ride check.

Big owl eggs are worth 500 gp apiece on the open market, while chicks are worth 750 gp each. Professional trainers charge 500 gp to rear or train a big owl.

Carrying Capacity: A light load for a big owl is up to 300 pounds; a medium load, 301–600 pounds; and a heavy load, 601–900 pounds.

Companions & Mounts[edit]

A big owl can serve as a Medium paladin's special mount. A big owl can be chosen as an animal companion on the 4th Level or Higher (Level –3) list for the druid.
