This morbid red gourd – if it can even be called such – resembles a demonic heart fused into a container and draped in ornate gilding depicting scenes of bloody sacrifce. The remnant of its aorta is warped into a slanted bottleneck from which rich crimson liquid flows.

The heart carries with it a strange and compelling power. The ancient Warminds of the Turraskan Veil believed that consuming the heart of a mighty beast imparted some of its power. The reclusive Szilard caste, through whose veins the cursed blood of their cannibalistic forebears runs strongly to this day, consider feasting upon the hearts of their sworn enemies to be a mark of adulthood. Hearts are offered in sacrifice to appease nebulous demonic entities masquerading as divinities. But the most profoundly twisted of hearts will continue beating after the body dies, and are transmogrified into potent relics by the profane crafts of warlocks and necromancers.

This morbid red gourd – if it can even be called such – resembles a demonic heart fused into a container and draped in ornate gilding depicting scenes of bloody sacrifce. The remnant of its aorta is warped into a slanted bottleneck from which rich crimson liquid flows.

A blood condensing gourd is in essence a potion with a fixed number of charges equal to its enhancement bonus ×20. When the blood condensing gourd is drank from, all the charges are consumed, restoring 1 hit point per charge, and 1 point of ability damage per 10 charges. Finally, the drinker gains an enhancement bonus to Strength and Dexterity equal to the gourd's enhancement bonus + 1. This is a healing effect, but its power does not stem from positive energy. As such, undead can benefit from the blood condensing gourd as well. Vampires especially regain 2 hit points for every 1 charge imbibed.

The blood condensing gourd regains charges as blood is drawn and lives are snuffed out, drawing vital force borne from injury and death into the gourd in order to provide healing and strength to its owner. For any of the following effects happening within 20 feet of the gourd's user, charges are regained as listed below:

  • 1 charge for every 10 points of damage dealt by a piercing or slashing source, to a maximum of 10% of the flask's capacity per round.
  • 2 charges for every creature suffering from bleedout, to a maximum of 10% of the flask's capacity per Round.
  • Charges equal to twice the total HD of creatures killed by piercing, slashing or bleedout effects, with no maximum per round besides the gourd's capacity.

The blood-drawing effect of a blood condensing gourd ignores creatures that are either unliving, have different blood, or have no blood at all, such as undead, constructs, aberrations, vermin, plants, oozes (with certain exceptions), elementals, and non-native outsiders that don't have blood.

Though its effects are mainly beneficial, the blood condensing gourd is a powerful cursed item. Though the user might benefit from its effects in combat and day to day life, with every swig of healing blood, they become slightly less of what they used to be. As they drink more and more, they may find themselves able to think and act in ways they never thought themselves capable of. Once a living creature drinks more than 1,000 charges from a blood condensing gourd, he or she automatically obtains the Willing DeformityBoVD feat, with all the consequences that entails.

Prerequisites: Brew Potion, Craft Wondrous Item, bestow curse, vampiric touch, crafter must supply the heart of a creature of a CR of at least 3 times the gourd's enhancement bonus.
Cost to Create: 2,000 gp, 160 EXP (+1); 4,500 gp, 360 EXP (+2); 7,500 gp, 600 EXP (+3); 11,000 gp, 880 EXP (+4); 15,000 gp, 1,200 EXP (+5); 4, 9, 15, 22 and 30 days respectively.
