You drop a shield centered on your location as a sphere or hemisphere if it passes through the ground, centered on yourself. Once cast, you can move away from the barrier as you see fit, it is locked in space. This barrier stops enemy attacks by absorbing the damage it would have otherwise done, while leaving ally attacks unaffected. The barrier can absorb 5 hp/level in damage before breaking, and excess damage from an attack that breaks is wasted.
