All of the following are class features of the Builder.

'''Weapon and Armor Proficiency:''' The expert is proficient in the use of all simple weapons, the [[Combat Spade (3.5e Equipment)|combat spade]], [[Combat Shovel (3.5e Equipment)|combat shovel]], and [[SRD:Warhammer|warhammer]], and with light armor but not shields.  Armor of any type interferes with a builder’s movements, which can cause her spells with somatic components to fail. 

'''{{Anchor|Spells}}:''' A builder casts arcane spells like a [[wizard]], and must choose and prepare her spells ahead of time (see below) keeping their spells in a spellbook. To learn, prepare, or cast a spell, the builder must have an [[Intelligence]] score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against a builder’s spell is 10 + the spell level + the builder’s [[Intelligence]] modifier. 

Like other spellcasters, a builder can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. Her base daily spell allotment is given on Table: The Builder. In addition, she receives bonus spells per day if she has a high [[Intelligence]] score. 

Unlike a bard or sorcerer, a builder may know any number of spells. She must choose and prepare her spells ahead of time by getting a good night’s sleep and spending 1 hour studying her spellbook. While studying, the builder decides which spells to prepare.

She can substitute a Use Magic Device check (DC 15 + spell level for arcane spells or 25 + spell level for divine spells) in place of a required spell she doesn't know or can't cast.

If the check succeeds, the builder can create the item as if she had cast the required spell. If it fails, she cannot complete the item. She does not expend the XP or gp costs for making the item; her progress is simply arrested. She cannot retry this Use Magic Device check for that spell until she gains a new level.
