In the off-mode, a burst hammer functions as a ''+1 [[SRD:Thundering|thundering]] [[SRD:Adamantine|adamantine]] [[Greathammer (3.5e Equipment)|greathammer]]'' with the ''weapon of impact'' enhancement ([[Spell Compendium|Spell Compendium]] p. 237).

A burst hammer owes its name to the propulsor fitted to its back, allowing it to be rocket-propelled during attacks. When this so-called 'burst mode' is activated, this increases the effective size category of the burst hammer by 2 sizes (to a base damage of 3d8), and adds 2d8 [[SRD:Sonic Effect|sonic]] damage (stacking with the weapon's [[SRD:Thundering|thundering]] enhancement) to every successful hit. Furthermore, the save DC against the on-crit [[SRD:Deafened|deafening]] effect of the [[SRD:Thundering|thundering]] enhancement becomes 10 + the wielder's [[SRD:Strength|Strength]] bonus when the burst mode is active.

Any wielder seeking to use the burst hammer in its burst mode must have a [[SRD:Strength|Strength]] score of 25 or higher. A wielder with a lower [[SRD:Strength|Strength]] score must make a DC 20 [[SRD:Strength|Strength]] check upon swinging a burst hammer in its burst mode, to prevent losing control of the weapon and effectively [[SRD:Disarm|disarming]] himself in the process.

A total of three times per day, a burst hammer can channel a ''[[SRD:Shatter|shatter]]'' effect ([[SRD:Caster Level|caster level]] 10th) upon a successful hit against a creature or object susceptable to the spell. This effect does not allow a save for half damage, and may be used a maximum of one time per [[SRD:Round|round]].
