All feats or abilities that applied to that weapon ([[SRD:Weapon Specialization|Weapon Specialization]], Ranger Combat Style) still apply. 
It is still the same weapon, you just are using it in a different way. 

When you do this, the weapon no longer has reach, and you may not set the weapon to do double damage against a charging opponent. 

If you do this more than once per round, the second use takes a move action, not a free action.

At the player's option, weapons like spears, would do slashing damage instead of piercing. Use your head.
