Called Shots[edit]

Many times, a player might want to target a specific limb or appendage to gain an advantage against a certain enemy or to weaken them so that allies might have an advantage. This variant attempts to allow for this in a balanced way that all players who make attacks can use, regardless of whether they're martial or magical in nature.

Once on their turn, characters of 5th level or higher can choose to take a penalty to a single attack to target a specific limb, as detailed below. Upon hitting, the target must make a saving throw with a DC equal to 8 + the character's proficiency bonus + the ability modifier they used to make the attack or take the listed penalty. The limb must be present and clearly seen in order to be targeted.

Arm[edit]

Strength saving throw, −2 penalty: The target reduces their attack rolls by 1d4 for one round with a weapon used by that arm.

Body[edit]

Constitution saving throw, −2 penalty: The target reduces their ability check rolls by 1d4 for one round.

Head[edit]

Constitution saving throw, −5 penalty: The target has disadvantage on attack rolls, and if they cast a spell, they must make a Constitution saving throw as though they had been hit while concentrating by your attack or be unable to cast the spell, losing the action (though the spell is not wasted).

Leg or Wing[edit]

Strength saving throw, −2 penalty: The target's speed is reduced by one-half for one round (land speed on a leg, fly speed on a wing).

Critical Hits[edit]

Some called shots are devastating when one is especially skilled or lucky. Should the called shot be a critical hit, one may target a specific part of the appendage for further results should the creature fail their saving throw.

Arm[edit]

Hand: The target drops one held item of your choice and is unable to use spells with a Somatic component for 1d4 rounds.

Body[edit]

Heart: The creature immediately suffers 2 levels of Exhaustion.

Vitals: The creature is Frightened for 1d4 rounds.

Head[edit]

Ear: The creature fails any sound-based Perception skill checks for 1d4 rounds and falls prone.

Eyes: The creature becomes Blinded for one round.

Mouth: The creature is unable to use spells with a Vocal component for one round.

Leg or Wing[edit]

Kneecap or Wing Joint: The creature's speed drops to 0 for one round. If it is flying, it immediately begins to fall.

Variant - Improved Called Shots[edit]

Should a character succeed on a called shot, they may attempt to "confirm" that called shot by rerolling their attack against the same armor class with the previous penalty. Should this second attack hit, the attack gains the listed effect as though it had been a critical hit. On a miss, the attack has no effect and deals no damage whatsoever.
