Canin, Giant

Canin look like an anthropromorphic version of a dog. The exact appearance will vary depending on what breed they are.

Personality

Canin are generally friendly. They are extremely loyal to their friends, often to a fault. Giant Canin are quiet and gentle. They are not particularly active nor do they move quickly if they don't have to, leading many to believe that they are lazy (they're not entirely wrong). Giant Canin scare easily and have a reputation for having a cowardly streak

Canin are an extremely diverse race. In addition to the basic race, there are also several different breeds. When creating a Canin character, you can stick with the basic race or choose a breed and apply it like a mini template, changing a few abilities and other aspects. I left the names of the breeds the same as they really are (mostly for simplicity), so name changes may be required. Just use whatever name would be the best fit for your setting

Akita|[1]: Akitas are powerful, independent, and dominant, affectionate with friends and family, but generally aloof toward strangers. They are generally accepting of non-threatening strangers, yet protective of their family when faced with a threatening situation and have an affinity for children. They have a tendency to be territorial and intolerant of other Canin of the same sex. They can be somewhat feline in their actions; it is not unusual for an Akita to clean its face after eating, to preen its house mate, and to be fastidious in the house. Akitas are extremely loyal to their friends and family, even more so than other Canin. All Canin are very loyal, but the Akita’s loyalty is legendary (look up the story of Hachiko for an excellent real world example, but be warned that it is a pretty sad story).,

Anatolian Shepherd|[2]: Anatolian Shepherds are rugged, large and very strong, with good sight and hearing. They are primarily livestock guardians and with their high speed and agility they are able to run down a predator with great efficiency. They are independent, forceful, intelligent, and learn quickly. They are also loyal and excellent protectors, but also tend to be quite relaxed and are never troublemakers. They enjoy the company of friends and family, but are wary towards strangers. Anatolian Shepherds love to roam, making them natural adventurers.

Bloodhound|[3]: Bloodhounds are gentle, willful, affectionate, even-tempered, and tireless when following a scent. They greatly enjoy the company of humanoid companions. They are extremely friendly, even with small children and with strangers. Although they generally lounge in the house and are quiet, they will become vocal and energetic outdoors. Bloodhounds have the best sense of smell of all the Canin, able to pick up scents days after they were left, and are the best trackers. automatically apply the Canin Scent Hound Template at character creation,

Bullmastiff|[4]: Bullmastiffs are intelligent, loyal, obedient, and courageous, both fearless and yet docile. They can be somewhat dominant toward other Bullmastiffs, but is very tolerant towards children. They are quite protective of their homes, friends, and family and will drive away unwanted strangers.,

Great Dane|[5]: The Great Dane's large and imposing appearance belies its friendly nature. They are spirited, friendly, dependable, loyal and intelligent. They are known for seeking physical affection with their friends, family, and adventuring companions, and the breed is often referred to as a "gentle giant”. They are gentle, playful, patient and loving creatures who get along with humanoids, animals, and other Canin very well. They are one of the tallest breeds of Canin. Although the Irish Wolfhound is generally taller overall, an individual Great Dane holds the record for tallest Canin ever. Great Danes have goofy, clownish personalities, enhanced by a slight clumsy streak due to their large, but lanky build. They can be courageous, but have a reputation for cowardice.,

Great Pyrenees|[6]: Great Pyrenees are confident, gentle (especially with children), and affectionate. While territorial and protective of their flock or friends and family when necessary, their general demeanor is of composure and patience and loyalty. They are strong willed, independent and reserved, as well as attentive, quite fearless and loyal to their duties. The Great Pyrenees' size makes it an imposing guardian. They are wary of strangers, but will settle down if their companions seem comfortable with the stranger. They are somewhat nocturnal and, while they don’t have true Darkvision, they have better night vision than many other breeds.,

Irish Wolfhound|[7] (qualifies for the Canin Sighthound Template if desired): The Irish Wolfhound is the tallest of the Canin breeds (although individual Great Danes can be taller). However, they are not the heaviest, having a build similar to that of a Greyhound. Irish wolfhounds have a varied range of personalities and are most often noted for their personal quirks and individualism. They are generally introverted, intelligent, easy-going, quiet, and reserved. They are also sweet-tempered, generous, patient, and thoughtful. They are independent creatures loyal to their friends and family. They can be protective, but usually are only willing to defend their companions and couldn’t care less about protecting their companions’ personal property. They are a bit standoffish, but generally friendly with strangers.

Mastiff|[8]: Mastiffs are the largest of all Canin breeds, not necessarily the tallest, but definitely the heaviest. They are immensely strong, but have one of the shortest life expectancies of all Canin. Mastiffs are calm and patient, attentive, confident, and smart. The quintessential gentle giant, they are not aggressive by nature but instead gentle and docile.

Newfoundland|[9]: Newfoundlands are known for their giant size, intelligence, tremendous strength, calm dispositions, and loyalty. They excel at water rescue/lifesaving because of their muscular build, thick double coat, webbed feet, and innate swimming abilities. When not working aquatic search and rescue missions, many make a living as fishermen. They are docile, sweet-natured and patient. Newfoundlands love children and are amazing good at interacting with them, earning them the nickname of the “Babysitter”. ,

St. Bernard|[10]: Saint Bernards are calm, patient and sweet with adults, and especially children. While known for their fierce loyalty and vigilance to their friends and family, they are a very friendly, intelligent, and gentle. St. Bernards are known for their ability to find people trapped in dangerous mountain regions, especially in heavy snow. They are well respected for their search and rescue operations, having saved countless lives over the centuries.

Physical Description

Describing an average canin is difficult due to the wide variety of them. Canin come in many “breeds” (as many as dogs do in fact) and each breed can vary greatly in size. They can be as smaller than a gnome or larger than a troll and everywhere in between. Canin place great value in honesty, integrity, and loyalty. Like dogs, Canin are fiercely loyal to their friends. Some are loyal to a fault. However, if one betrays or severely violates a Canin’s moral code, it is possible to lose their loyalty, but only if the act was severe enough to destroy the friendship (something that Canin do not take well at all). Evil Canin are extremely rare. The few that exist (that aren’t undead or, in one extremely rare and tragically ironic case, a werewolf) are that way because of tragic circumstances in their past, usually multiple instances of abuse or betrayal by those they trusted. Most Canin are hard working and quite happy to do physically demanding jobs, although some of the larger breeds are known to be a bit lazy. Canin seem to have a readiness to fight inversely related to size. The smaller the Canin, the more feisty and ready for a fight they seem to be (although most will end up hiding behind a larger friend when the one they challenge seems to accept). Smaller breeds of Canin also seem to have more dominant personalities. It is not uncommon to see a group of troll sized Canin taking orders from a gnome sized one. Their senses of hearing and smell are extraordinary, making them excellent trackers and leading more than a few to pursue the career of a woodsman or a bounty hunter. There are too many breeds of Canin to stat each one individually, but they can be easily divided into five categories: Toy, Miniature, Standard, Large, and Giant. While they are all the same species, some of the racial features may differ between the different categories. Most will be the same, but attributes will differ. The Giant Canin are the largest of the Canin. Despite their intimidating size, they are the least threatening of the species. Giant Canin are gentle giants and very friendly. Breeds among the Giant Canin include the Great Dane, Bull Mastiff, Mastiff, Irish Wolfhound, Anatolian Shepherd, and any other breeds in that size range. When creating a Giant Canin character, you can choose a breed for your character to be at character creation or stick with the basic race as is and call yourself a mutt. Some breeds may have additional abilities that are added onto the basic race. When it comes to classes, Giant Canin are very much aware of their problems and would very much like to overcome them, whether physical or mental. They prefer classes that allow them to perfect themselves, improving their health and mental states

Relations

Canin get along with most of the other races. They are especially friendly with humans. Dwarves get frustrated with them due to their inactivity, believing them too lazy to be of use. They get along remarkably well with Halflings, who are quite laid back themselves, and gnomes, who appreciate that they don't bother to retaliate for their pranks. Canin are a bit leery of half-orcs, but are more open minded than other races and are willing to give individuals a chance, often warming up to them. They dislike the drow, orcs, and other monstrous evil races for their cruel ways, but are sometimes willing to give individuals a chance to prove themselves

Racial Traits

  • +4 Strength, +4 Charisma, -4 Dexterity, -4 Wisdom: Giant Canin are incredibly strong, and very likable, but they are notoriously clumsy and are somewhat goofy and weak willed
  • Humanoid (Anthro)
  • Huge: As a Huge creature, a canin, giant takes a -2 size penalty to Armor Class, a -2 size penalty on attack rolls, a +8 size bonus on special attack (bull rushes, grapples, overruns, and trips) checks, and a -8 size penalty on Hide checks, but it uses larger weapons than humans use, and its lifting and carrying limits are quadruple of those of a Medium character. They have a space and reach of 15 feet.
  • Canin, Giant base land speed is 40 feet.
  • +2 Racial Bonus on Spot checks
  • +4 Racial Bonus on Listen checks
  • +4 Racial Bonus on Survival when tracking with scent
  • Imposing (Ex): +4 Racial Bonus on Bluff and Intimidate checks
  • All Bark, No Bite (Ex): Giant Canin are big babies with a reputation for being scardey cats and cowards. If a Giant Canin uses his Imposing ability and fails the checks, the effects are reversed back onto him and he must make a Will Save (DC 10+1/2 his own character level+his own Cha Modifier) or flee. This counts as a Fear Effect, so Big Baby (described below) applies
  • Scent
  • Natural Attack (Ex): Bite dealing 2d6+1.5x Strength Modifier Damage
  • Big Baby (Ex): -2 penalty on saving throws against fear: The bigger the dog, the bigger the baby. This applies to Canin as well and Giant Canin have a reputation as scaredy cats
  • Chocolate Vulnerability (Ex): Chocolate is bad for Canin. If ingested, it is treated as a Poison, specifically Black Adder Venom with a DC of 20
  • Intellectual Sensory (Ex): Canin use their Intelligence Modifier on Spot, Listen, and Survival checks instead their Wisdom Modifier.
  • Smart Wits (Ex): Canin use their Intelligence Modifier instead of their Wisdom Modifier on Will Saves
  • STUPID DOG! (Ex): Smart as they are, Canin are known for their lack of common sense. They have a tendency to do something without thinking things through, including things that most people would not do out of simple common sense. Examples include picking a fight with a creature significantly bigger and stronger than yourself (adventurers don’t count since that’s part of their job), tasting a strange looking food-like object in the middle of a dungeon, testing a trap discovered by the Rogue to see what it does, etc. Whenever a Canin has the urge to do something that is considered by most to be a bad idea by common sense, they must make a Will Save (DC 15 +1 per round that they remain in the area with the temptation still around) to resist. If the save fails, they must do whatever it is that they want to do. Only being physically restrained by their companions will prevent the action, allowing for another save to resist the urge. When STUPID DOG! comes into play, Smart Wits does not apply and they roll the Save using their Wisdom Modifier as normal
