Druid entreating the favor of a strig.

As the druid placed down the offering, the great tangle of moss, mushrooms, and lillypads rose from the surface of the lake. Its body was massive, built like an ape forged of twisted wood and vine. Where a face should be lay a blank empty hole, utterly dark, with only four almond shaped glowing eyes peering from its depths. Though it possessed no wings, its shape of its head suggested that of an owl.

It is said that once a sect of druids sought wisdom in all things. These truth seeking sages took part in great divinations, traveled the world, and learned many secrets. They discovered knowledge beyond knowledge, but ultimately took the knowledge to the grave. Thus they were returned to their ancestral homes and given to nature. In time, nature cycled through once more and the lost knowledge resurfaced under a new face.

Carradine strigs are powerful fey who are akin to dragons, but they hoard knowledge instead of wealth. They peer through reality with their 888 secret eyes, foretelling the future as easily as one can look towards the horizon. This makes them valued wisemen, yet they are territorial and reclusive beasts, so only the foolish and the hardy ever discover them. If one can make peaceful contact and not merely be rejected, the strig may yet reveal knowledge of things to come with its vast array of wisdom. They speak with the continence and gruffness of an old man, but can be bribed with knowledge they have yet to obtain. They are known for their long memories, and sometimes perform favors, or wreck vengeance, upon generations from ages past. It is believed that they can live as long as dragons.

While its Speak with Nature ability allows it to communicate in most tongues, its actual languages known as Common, Druidic, Sylvan, and all elemental languages. Carradine strigs are 25 ft tall at the shoulder and weigh 80,000 lbs.

Combat[edit]

Some have compared a carradine strig to a dragon, and the comparison may be apt. Territorial of their lair and powerful in both spells and strength, the carradine strig has little to fear from others. It will often seek to swallow the most weak willed member, weave enchantments to spread discord amongst their foes, then use brute strength to remove anyone with the mental fortitude to persist. With superior foresight abilities while in their lair, they almost always dictate when and where encounters begin and end.

Greenblooded (Ex): The carradine strig may count as a Plant as well as their original type when beneficial. Carradine strigs also do not need to breathe.

Hyperarmor (Ex): The carradine strig cannot have an action be interrupted through attacks of opportunity (such as provoking from a disarm attempt, or casting a spell). They still provoke as normal.

Immunities: Carradine strigs are immune to disease, fear, poison, and sleep effects, as well as the distraction ability of swarms.

Lair Bond: The carradine strig can mark out a 500 ft radius territory as its "lair" over the course of a week. Once established the gains several benefits while in their lair.

1/day-antipathy (DC 24), control weather, ironwood, snare, screen, sympathy (DC 24).
  • Life Ward (Su): The carradine strig gains fast healing 2 within its lair, and undead attacking it with natural weapons or unarmed strikes take 2 points of positive energy damage upon touching the carradine strig.
  • Omniscience (Su): The carradine strig gains blindsense on all creatures within its lair, and blindsight if in its lair and within 60 ft. This is divination based rather than sound based (as is its normal blindsense), and effects which block divination are effective against this ability.
  • World Magic: Once every 5 rounds, the carradine strig may use one of its spell-like abilities as if affected by Quicken Spell.

Speak with Nature (Su): A carradine strig is able to speak and understand the language of any natural living creature, its words translated automatically to the natural language of the listener. Aberrations, constructs, and undead are exempt. It also is constantly under the effect of speak with animals and speak with plants.

Spell-Like Abilities (Sp): At will-animal messenger, animal trance, arcane sight, atonement, commune with nature, detect undead, detect thoughts (DC 17), endure elements, faerie fire, gentle repose, gust of wind (DC 17), hide from animals, identify, know direction, light, locate creature, naturewatchSpC, purify food and drink, read magic, sanctuary (DC 16), status, whispering wind;
2/day-augury, bestow curse (DC 19), confusion (DC 19), creeping doom, deep slumber (DC 18), divination, entangle (DC 16), fear (DC 19), fog cloud, insect plague, invisibility, major image (DC 18), mass contagionSpC (DC 20), meld into stone, phantasmal killer (DC 19), poison (DC 25), rainbow pattern (DC 19), speak with dead, summon nature's ally VIII, sunburst (DC 23), wind wall;
1/day-air walk, baleful polymorph (DC 20), break enchantment, commune, cure critical wounds, death ward, dream, feeblemind (DC 20), fire storm (DC 22), foresight, greater scrying (DC 22), ice storm, mind fog, moment of prescience, nightmare (DC 20), regenerate, repel metal or stone, restoration, shadow walk (DC 21), sleet storm, sunbeam (DC 22), tree stride, wall of thorns;
1/week-reincarnate, vision. Caster level 20th, the save DCs are Wisdom based.

Swallow Whole (Ex): While a carradine strig lacks a bite attack, the hole that is its face is but a portal to a shadowy nightmare dimension from which is lurks. If the carradine strig starts its turn grappling a creature, it may attempt a new grapple check (as if attempting to pin) to force it through its face, provided it is at least two sizes smaller than itself. The creature is transported to a black void surrounded by many many more glowing eyes than the carradine strig normally has, and it takes 1d6 points of Wisdom damage and 3d10 mind-affecting nonlethal damage a round. In addition the creature must make a Will save DC 25, or be shaken for as long as they are swallowed and 1d4 rounds after. A swallowed creature is considered to be grappled, while the creature that did the swallowing is not. A swallowed creature can try to cut its way free with any light slashing or piercing weapon by dealing 20 damage to the walls of this void, or by trying to escape the grapple. The AC of the interior is AC 23. Unlike normal swallow whole, if the creature escapes the swallow whole attempt they are deposited in the nearest empty space and are not grappled. The save DC is Wisdom based.

Trackless Step (Ex): The carradine strig leaves no trail in natural surroundings and cannot be tracked. They may choose to leave a trail if so desired.

True Seeing (Su): Carradine strigs are always under the effect of true seeing.

Wild Empathy (Ex): The carradine strig has Wild Empathy of a druid of its level.
