Within the ancient jungles known as the Green Veil dwell a great number of as of yet undiscovered prehistoric beasts. Among these great and terrifying creatures, the garish chronodon surely stands out as unique.

Believed to be a precursor or a co-evolution to dragons, chronodons have subsisted within undiscovered reaches of the world for millions of years with very little change to their physiques. Despite their lack of wings, their physiology is that of a dragon, including a primitive version of a draconis fundamentum that stores excess energy within the body and expels it in the shape of a breath weapon. Physically, a chronodon resembles a heavily armored salamander, with a large, vibrant fin-like comb on its back that constantly shifts colors.

Chronodons are more like intelligent beasts than dragons in terms of evolution, not having awakened to full sentience like their true dragon cousins, and have often been falsely classified as a dinosaur-type magical beast in the past. A chronodon exposed to sentient creatures for an extended period can learn to understand language to a certain extent. Chronodons are carnivorous and especially enjoy the meat of mammalean creatures.

Chronodons have immense longevity and can live for several thousand years. The royal family of a small desert kingdom called Narue is known to have had a pet chronodon named Lassie for at least 87 generations of its rulers, during which a great many criminals ended up devoured in showy executions.

A fully adult chronodon is roughly 20 to 25 feet from head to tail and weighs approximately 3,000 pounds. Its long and powerful tail comprises about half of its length.

Combat

Chronodons usually only attack when provoked or hungry, and have a good sense of avoiding danger when they are not otherwise compelled. When hunting or fighting weaker creatures, a chronodon will often simply aim to bite its quarry to death, though when threatened it employs an arsenal of dangerous magical abilities.

A chronodon's natural weapons and any attacks it makes are treated as magical for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

Fantasy Space (Su): By exciting its comb, the chronodon can create a space where the senses are distorted. When this ability is active, the chronodon creates a 40-foot-radius emanation centered on itself in which all geographic features become invisible, overlaid by a haze of vibrant, shifting colors. Forcing everyone to feel around in an attempt to maintain a sense of one's surroundings, the fantasy space becomes effective difficult terrain, and elements within the fantasy space can appear in different locations from where they really are. The chronodon can displace the imagined locations of any creatures within the fantasy space by up to 15 feet in any direction, often using this ability to overlay its own imagined location with that of a nearby enemy creature to try and make enemies attack each other.

The fantasy space is an illusory effect. Creatures caught inside must make a DC 21 Will save to disbelieve the fantasy space's displacement effect and see creatures and objects where they really are. The chronodon itself is immune to the effects of its fantasy space. True seeing can see through the fantasy space's effects.

The effects of the fantasy space last 1 minute or until voluntarily dismissed by the chronodon, and it must wait for 1 hour before it can be used again.

Glitterdust (Sp): The chronodon releases a cloud of glittering flakes from its comb within a 20-foot-radius spread centered on itself. This functions as per a widened glitterdust spell (DC 18). It is the equivalent of a 3rd-level spell that may be used at will. Caster level 12th.

Prismatic Bite (Su): The chronodon's bite natural weapon is under a continuous prismatic edge effect. Every time its bite successfully deals damage, the spell's effects are added.

Prismatic Breath (Su): The chronodon's breath projects a 40-foot cone with dazzling multi-colored light. Creatures caught within the breath's area of effect are affected as per prismatic spray (DC 24). The save DC is Constitution-based. After this ability is used, the chronodon must wait 2d4+2 rounds before it can be used again.

Tail Whip (Ex): The chronodon's long and powerful tail attacks every creature within a 10-foot cone. A creature that is successfully hit by the chronodon's tail is automatically bull rushed at a +18 modifier. The chronodon does not move along with the bull rush.

Skills: A chronodon has a +8 racial bonus to Climb checks.
