A strange flag flaps in the wind, only for it to detach and fly away into the sky.
Born of strange magical deserts where animating unliving materials was commonplace, these strange constructs are made out of scraps of cloth, flags, banners, and tapestries. They are much akin to animated objects but possess some strange behaviors which separate them from standard creations. For one their creation is not entirely known as they seem to spontaneously animate from otherwise unremarkable bits of cloth, with the only common thread (pun not intended) is that it is cloth which has fallen into disuse or has been thrown out. From this the cloth takes flight and takes on the mimicry of bird life, even going through mock feeding and chirping and migrations with seemingly no need for any of these activities. While technically mindless, they follow a surprisingly complex instinct which could be confused for dim intellect.
When "active", the flying cloth can be distinguished by the presence of several glowing runes which line the edges of the cloth with a more complicated rune for its "head". It can "speak" via strange chime and bell like noises and the flashing of its runes into brighter or larger prominence. However they do not seem to have any language. Those that have spent a great deal of time around intelligent beings may understand, but not speak, their language.
Flagbirds are rarely aggressive and often timid, running from danger. In combat they can fly over the faces of their opponents to blind them, then constricting them into unconsciousness. However, they pose little to no threat to anyone but small animals. The flagbird's only attack, a slap with its body, only deals nonlethal damage.
Blinding (Ex): A flagbird can grapple an opponent up to three sizes larger than itself. The object makes a normal grapple check. If it wins, it wraps itself around the opponent’s head, causing that creature to be blinded until removed.
Constrict (Ex): A flagbird deals damage equal to its slap damage value plus 1- 1/2 times its Strength bonus with a successful grapple check against a creature up to one size larger than itself.
Ego: Clothlings have a strange sense of self imbued within them even if they lack intellect. For the purpose of their instinctive behavior and cunning, their Charisma is a stand in for their Intelligence score. They can also obtain tricks as if they were animals.
Flagbirds in particular exhibit bird like behaviors, and can potentially be trained to perform tricks such as sounding off or performing simple semaphore.
Flagform (Ex): Clothlings are made of fabric, and as such are immune to bludgeoning damage. In addition they may "mount" themselves onto surfaces such as the edge of a building or a pole and drape like a flag. When doing so their runes fade and they can pass for a normal flag with a +20 bonus to the Disguise check as long as they remain immobile.
Windblown (Ex): Clothlings are very thin and light. They are immune to falling damage, and count as one size smaller than normal for the purpose of interacting with wind effects. However if mounted via flagform they are securely anchored and considered one size larger for interacting with wind effects. They also always take minimum damage from [Air] spells and wind effects.
Animal Companion and Familiar
The flagbird can be taken as a familiar. It grants the owner a +3 bonus to Jump checks (for 3.5e) or +3 bonus to Fly checks (for Pathfinder). They may be also selected as an animal companion for druid or rangers.
