This spell is meant to replace the "Commune with Lesser Spirit" and "Commune with Greater Spirit" spells from Complete Arcane.


Commune with Spirits
Divination
Level: Wu Jen 3
Components: V, S, M
Casting time: 10 minutes
Range: 60 ft
Effect or Area: One spirit, 60 ft diameter of terrain, or inanimate non-magical object within range
Duration: 1 minute/level
Saving Throw: Will negates; see text
Spell Resistance: No

You open your eyes and find the world alive and buzzing. They whisper secrets and truths to you.

You contact the ambient living spirits flowing through the world (or creatures classified as spirits with 4 HD or less) and speak with them telepathically. This effectively grants the effect of spells like speak with plants and stone tell, but limited to the fixed perspective and location of one any non-magical inanimate object, a 60 ft area of terrain, or a single spirit as defined in Complete Divine. It effectively draws answers from a spirit creature who is unable or unwilling to speak with you otherwise. You may ask up to 1 question per 2 caster levels for the duration, and questions are answered as a one-word answer ("yes", "no", "maybe", "unclear", "red", and so forth) or a short phrase up to 5 words if a single word would be misleading. They answer truthfully, as far as they can tell.

If the target has been subject to this spell within the last week, the spell fails. If the spirit's alignment (if it even has one) differs from yours, it gets a Will save to resist. If it only differs on one axis, they take a -2 penalty on their Will save, and a +2 bonus if it is polar opposite (such as LG vs CE).

If cast in a 5th level spell slot, this becomes Commune with Greater Spirits. You can now ask spirits up to 12 HD or less.

If cast in a 7th level spell slot, this becomes Commune with Elder Spirits. You can now ask spirits up to any number of HD, and ask 1 question per caster level.

If cast in a 9th level spell slot, this becomes Commune with Universe. You can now ask the essence of the universe, and it will answer 1 question per caster level with complete truth and understanding. However, with each question there is a 10% you will gain a score (or an additional point) of dark insight as it answers all questions with absolute truth. If you are not using dark insight rules, you instead take a 10% chance of receiving 1d6 points of Wisdom burn.

Material Component: 10 gp in incense.

For Commune with Greater Spirits, the cost is 50 gp in incense.

For Commune with Elder Spirits, the cost is 250 gp in incense.

For Commune with Universe, the cost is 1250 gp in incense, and you are rendered shaken for 24 hours.
