''What appeared to be a bear from afar reveals itself as a mass of wet earth, plant fibers, fungus, and organic decaying rot merely in the shape of a bear.''

Originally thought to be an undead due to the method of its creation, the compost bear is neither bear nor undead, but technically a plant, or more accurately a chimera of mobile soil, fungus, rotting plant and animal material, and animating force.  Believed to be the result when a bear dies within compost or garbage, the wild natural spirit of the bear is reborn to heal the natural world the only way it knows how: through rot, decay, and renewal.  It superficially appears to be a bear, but a close inspection reveals itself as a mass of rot-heavy soil filled with worms and bacteria that breaks down garbage introduced to it into rich damp soil.  This soil sheds off of it as it moves, enriching the land it passes.  Unfortunately as they are spawned from heaps of rot and trash it is all too common to find these beings spawning accidentally within cities where they proceed to devour trash, haunt sewers, and "correct" the plant-deprived city by seeding it with life and tearing apart anything in its way while it does so.

These massive trash eating beasts weigh more than 1,800 pounds and stand nearly 9 feet tall when they rear up on their hind legs. They are bad-tempered and are often found among rot.
