Corpselight Assassin[edit]

The accomplishments of one's life are never appreciated until death.
—Asher Quickfoot, Halfling Corpselight Assassin

From the cold Assassin to the righteous Avenger, those who stalk the shadows are accompanied by the spirits of the men and women they have put to ground. Although some of these "Professionals" are aware of the chains of responsibility coiled around themselves, fewer still have the will and the wherewithal to explore this intimate connection to Death. For those shadow-stalkers who have returned from beyond the veil of mortality, the path of the Corpselight is as alluring as any lady of the night

Becoming a Corpselight Assassin[edit]

Almost every corpselight assassin started their careers as Rogues, but others are Ninjas, spellthiefs, or even scouts. Although Dexterity is important for all rogues, Constitution controls the Corpselight Assassin's supernatural abilities.

Class Features[edit]

All of the following are class features of the Corpselight Assassin.

Secrets of the Dead (Su): When the Corpselight Assassin slays a creature using his Sneak Attack (Or Death Attack or other precision based damage), he may as an immediate action, enter the subjects mind. This ability functions like the spell Speak with Dead, only that the entirety of their conversation lasts as long as the immediate action, regardless of how many questions are asked. The Corpselight Assassin's Caster Level is Equal to 1/2 his HD. This ability only functions if the Corpselight Assassin is using a melee weapon.

Sneak Attack: At Levels 1, 3, and 5, the Corpselight Assassin gains additional Sneak Attack damage.

Spurn Malevolence (Ex): Starting At Second Level, the Assassin's indomitable will to live (or merely to escape the fate awaiting him on the other side) manifests in a minor, physical way. the Corpselight Assassin may add his Constitution Modifier as a bonus to his saves against Energy Damage, Energy Drain, Level Damage/Drain, Death Effects, and the Malevolence ability of Undead and Outsiders.

Living Defense (Ex): Starting At Fourth Level, the Corpselight Assassin's joie de vivre (Or again, perhaps fear of the other side) has become so powerful that he exudes a veritable aura of life. Spirits find this aura anathema, and are loathe to face him in combat. He may add his Constitution Modifier as a bonus to his AC against Incorporeal Touch Attacks. In addition, he adds his Constitution Modifier as a bonus to his attack rolls against Incoporeal Creatures, and any weapon he wields is treated as having the Ghost Touch Property. As a downside, the Corpselight Assassin detects as a creature a size category larger than he is when an undead creature utilizes Lifesense against him. However, if he has the Darkstalker feat, then he is not detected at all, as per normal.

Corpselight (Su): At 5th Level, the Corpselight Assassin may himself become a Corpselight. While in his Corpselight Form, the Assassin's Size becomes Tiny, he gains a Fly Speed of 60' (Perfect), and he is Immune to Mind Affecting Affects. In addition, while in his Corpselight form, he Gains the Ethereal Property. He may stay in his Corpselight form for 10 + Constitution Modifier Rounds per day. Whenever he assumes Corpselight form, the Assassin may allow the spirits of those he has slain to also manifest as corpselights. The number of corpselights that manifests is equal to (Class Level X Con Modifier). Although these corpselights cannot attack, they can provide a welcome distraction to the Assassin as he makes his escape through scores of identical looking tiny balls of light. Any hostile creature who can see the corpselights when they manifest must make a will save DC (10 +1/2 Assassin's HD + Con) or become frightened for as long as they can see the corpselights. Those who succeed are merely shaken for 5 rounds. Those who fail by five or more are panicked, and must flee in a random direction for 1d4 minutes. This ability affects creatures who are normally immune to fear and mind-affecting effects.

Campaign Information[edit]

Playing a Corpselight Assassin[edit]

Combat: A Corpselight Assassin is Still a Rogue. Treat him as such.

Advancement: Most Corpselight Assassins take additional levels in Rogue, or multi-class to other light armored classes, such as Swashbucklers or Rangers.

Corpselight Assassins in the World[edit]

You can tell me now, or I can kill you and get the information that way. Your choice.

NPC Reactions: Although Most NPC's can't tell the difference between a normal rogue and a Corpselight Assassin, those who can (Or have some tenuous connection to the spirit world) typically regard them with either Awe, fear, or plain distrust, depending on the Assassin's reputation.

Corpselight Assassin Lore[edit]

Characters with ranks in Knowledge (Religion) can research Corpselight Assassins to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge (Religion)
DC Result
11 Corpselight Assassins are assassins who have returned from the dead with strange new powers
16 Corpselight Assassins can speak with the spirits of those they have killed, and are skilled at battling ghosts and the like.
