Dark Bairn

A dark bairn is a witch chosen as a child, lacking a familiar but possessing a mark on their body where they draw their powers. Most dark bairns are taken as a child to be given as offering, but survive the process with a dark mark on their body where their sacrificial wound would be. Some dark bairns are chosen by their patron as a child, drawn to the wood by a strange voice where they vanish for a time and return with an odd mark on their body. They grows into adults with strong connection with an unseen force, granting them strange abilities.

A dark bairn has an innate connection through their patron, but not one under the patron's control. Some dark bairns rebel from their unwilling covenant, using power stolen from their patron to thwart them. All the while others embrace the connection, and study the art of witchcraft in isolation.

Class: Pathfinder Witch

Prerequisites: 1st Level Only

Level: 1st, 8th

Replaces: Familiar, 8th level Hex

Benefit: A Dark Bairn gain the following class features:

Dark Mark (Ex): A dark bairn does not have a familiar, instead they have a mark somewhere on their body which contains their spells much like a familiar do. Instead of communing with their familiar, a dark bairn simply meditates and draws power from their dark mark to prepare their spells. A dark mark is visible through clothes through the detect evil spells, radiating an evil aura using the witch's HD. If the mark is somehow removed or amputated, it reappears 24 hours later on another part of the witch's body.

The bearer of a dark mark may spontaneously cast one of her patron spells by expending a prepared or empty spell slot of the same level.

Extra Hex: A dark bairn has extremely strong ties with their patron, whether they want it or not. At 1st level, a dark bairn starts with an extra hex chosen from the witch list.

Dark Channeling (Ex): At 8th level, a dark brain's ability to draw upon her dark mark expands beyond its normal limits. She chooses another patron, gaining the associated spells as patron spells. This new patron is an extension of the witch's own power granted through the dark mark, not an association with a new entity.
