A base staff is a staff which does not initially have any spells upon it (and thus is more akin to a rod), though spells may be applied to it as normal through crafting feats.  Initially acting as a masterwork [[SRD:Quarterstaff|quarterstaff]], it provides the following additional benefits.

* '''Aligned Weapon:''' This staff counts as a weapon an alignment of the diety it is associated with.  If true neutral, it is associated as bypassing a single alignment, chosen on creation.  It always bypasses the damage reduction of outsiders with opposing alignments.

* '''Bane/Boon of the Undead:''' Depending on the deity, this staff either harms or helps the undead.  Bane of the Undead deals an additional +1d6 points of damage to any attack, spell cast from the staff, or spell using the staff as an optional focus against the undead.  Conversely boon of the undead adds +1d6 temporary hit points to an undead touched by your staff or affected by a spell from the staff or cast through your staff as a focus.  These temporary hit points persist until used, but do not stack.

* '''Divine Reach:''' You are considered to have reach for the purpose of ''[[SRD:Cure Light Wounds|cure]]'' and ''[[SRD:Inflict Light Wounds|inflict]]'' spells.

* '''Mark of the Divine:''' The staff counts as a holy (or unholy) symbol.  As long as you have it, you gain a +1 effective level on turning or rebuking checks.
