Eldritch Shield
Blast Shape - Warlock Least, Occultist Savant Least; 1st

When you use this blast shape on an Eldritch Blast, it forms a shifting Shield of energy around your body. This Shield has 2 HP per dice of damage your Eldritch Blast would normally deal, and does not grant immunity to critical hits, but does grant a +1 Deflection bonus to AC, +1 per 3 EB dice you possess (Max +5). The Shield and all associated benefits last for 2 rounds, or until the Shield is destroyed.

The invocation has additional abilities based on what Eldritch Essence you use with it, as follows. Each effect grants defenses against the essence's normal offensive capability, subtracting from the Shield's health when the Warlock is subjected to such an effect. While the Shield is active, you cannot utilize the same Blast Essence that was used to create the shield.

While the Shield is active, creatures that successfully attack you in melee with non-reach or natural weapons take damage equal to the damage they dealt to the Shield; The damage type is based on, and carries the normal effects of, the Essence used to create the Shield.

When the Shield is destroyed by damage (But not merely from expiring or being dispelled), it explodes, dealing your normal Eldritch Blast damage (With a Reflex save for half damage) to all creatures within 10ft of you. You are automatically excluded from this damage, and may exclude up to 1 additional creature from the damage for every EB dice you possess. However, when the Shield is broken in this way, you can instead expend an attack of opportunity as an immediate action, in order to focus the damage at a single target, in the form of a ray that is identical to your default Eldritch Blast (With no Essence or Shape applied).

No Essence: Spell Resistance equal to 10 + 1 per dice of Eldritch Blast you possess. Spells absorbed by this SR deal 2 points of damage to the shield, +2 per spell level (Max 20 damage for a 9th-level spell; This SR has no effect against Epic spells).

Frightful Blast/Blast of Defeat: Immunity to Fear while the Shield persists. Fear effects absorbed deal damage to the Shield equal to the effect's save DC.

Sickening Blast: Immunity to Sickening and Nausea while the Shield persists. Such effects absorbed deal damage to the Shield equal to the effect's save DC.

Beshadowed Blast: Immunity to Blindness, Deafness, Dazzling, and Gaze Attacks while the Shield persists. Such sensory effects absorbed deal damage to the Shield equal to the effect's save DC.

Brimstone Blast/Pyroclastic Blast: The Shield gains Resistance to Fire equal to 1 + 1 per dice of Eldritch Blast you possess.

Hellrime Blast/Dagon's Icy Grip/Breath of Levistus/Stygian Frost Blast: The Shield gains Resistance to Cold equal to 1 + 1 per dice of Eldritch Blast you possess.

Bewitching Blast/Mindrending Blast/Malcanthet's Chains: Immunity to Mind-Affecting effects while the Shield persists. Mind-Affecting effects absorbed deal damage to the Shield equal to the effect's save DC.

Noxious Blast/Sloughskin Blast/Pathosis Blast/Venomous Blast: Immunity to Poison, Disease, Ability Damage, Ability Drain, and effects that reduce Natural Armor, while the Shield persists. Such effects absorbed deal damage to the Shield equal to the effect's save DC.

Repelling Blast/Delirium of Demogorgon/Banishing Blast/Fist of Baphomet: Immunity to Knockback, Trip, Reverse Gravity, Banishment and other forms of nonconsensual movement resulting from something other than teleportation, while the Shield persists. Such effects absorbed deal damage to the Shield equal to the effect's save DC.

Vitrolic Blast/Bonemelting Blast: The Shield gains Resistance to Acid equal to 1 + 1 per dice of Eldritch Blast you possess.

Utterdark Blast/Touch of Orcus/Essence Blast: Immunity to Negative Levels while the Shield persists. Energy Drain effects absorbed deal damage to the Shield equal to the effect's save DC. Additionally, the Shield gains Resistance to Essence damage equal to 2 + 2 per dice of Eldritch Blast you possess.

Blastbind: Immunity to the spell attached to the Blastbind for as long as the Blastbind lasts. When the spell is absorbed, it deals 1 point of damage to the Shield, plus 1 for every 2 levels the spell is above 1st (Min damage 1, Max 5).

Dark Spiral Aura/Lifedrain Blast/Draining of Orcus: Immunity to attempts to steal your health; These are effects that deal damage to a target and heal the caster or grant the caster temporary hit points, such as Vampiric Touch. Such effects backfire, affecting the caster as if you had cast it on them instead. Life-stealing effects so reflected deal damage to the Shield equal to the effect's save DC.

Prismatic Blast/Prismatic Energy: Immunity to the first 7 instances of damage from any Prismatic sources; If struck by multiple colors, the corresponding number of "charges" is consumed. Each instance of damage absorbed also destroys 1 color layer of any layered Prismatic effect, such as Prismatic Wall. Absorbing a Prismatic effect deals damage to the Shield equal to the effect's save DC. Being subjected to an effect that would destroy a layer of Prismatic Wall (Such as Cone of Cold) also consumes one of the seven charges in addition to the normal effects.

Force Blast: The Shield gains Resistance to Force equal to 1 + 1 per dice of Eldritch Blast you possess. Additionally, the Shield negates Magic Missiles and anything that counts as a Magic Missile, without dealing damage to the Shield at all.

Hexing Blast: Immunity to Curses while the Shield persists. Such effects absorbed deal damage to the Shield equal to the effect's save DC.

Physical Blast/Vulnerable Blast: The Shield gains DR/Magic equal to 1, + 1 per 3 dice of Eldritch Blast you possess. Additionally, this Physical Shield confers immunity to critical hits while active, provided the critical damage multiplier is equal to or lower than the Shield's DR/Magic value. If the multiplier is higher than the DR, the critical hit bypasses the immunity.

Entropic Blast: Immunity to aging, Slowing and [Time] effects while the Shield persists. Such effects absorbed deal damage to the Shield equal to the effect's save DC. Additionally, the Shield gains Resistance to Entropy equal to 1 + 1 per dice of Eldritch Blast you possess.

Essence Blast: Immunity to Curses while the Shield persists. Such effects absorbed deal damage to the Shield equal to the effect's save DC.

Adaptation

Effects can be created for any other Eldritch Essence invocation not already found on this list; The shield protects against what the blast would normally inflict. By default, Essences that change damage type give the Shield resistance to that damage type equal to 1 + 1 per EB dice; And Essences that add a "Save vs. X" effect grant immunity to said effect, causing the effect to deal damage to the Shield equal to the DC.

NOTE: When combined with the Eldritch Blast Specialist, this invocation becomes ridiculously powerful; Allowing them to negate many annoying effects and granting resistance to various forms of damage in addition to the EBS's already-high damage output. Use that combo at your own risk. If your player breaks your game with this, advice from one DM to another: Instead of pulling your hair out in frustration, pull out theirs. It's more fun.*

  • DISCLAIMER That's a joke, peeps. Do it only at your own risk.
