The giant groaned as it stood up slowly, grabbed a tree for a club, and began lurching forward with anger in its eyes.

When first discovered by accident when digging into an unusual geologic mound, the fulgigas is far different from the rest of their giant kin. While most giants are massive humanoids with human level intellect even counting the dim witted hill giants, the fulgigas or "Dirt Giant" is little more than an animal masquerading in humanoid form. Forged of rough stone-like skin and course short body hair that seems to attract dirt, grime, mold, and even plant matter, the fulgigas was traditionally hunted or enslaved. They were dull and trainable like any common beast and it was for this reason that their numbers may have been culled from whatever they once were. Due to the nature of its mind it is believed that this is no precursor species to the giant or natural degeneracy but is instead the end result of a massive and unspeakable curse or genocide on an unknown species of giant whose civilization collapsed and brought their kind into a stone age. Their exact numbers are hard to determine, as they have a habit of blending in with their environment in eternal hibernation.

Their biology is strange, possessing thick oil-like blood that dries over quickly and unlike their kin they seem to have no need to eat or breathe and are biologically immortal as if they were actually elementals. To this day many have been found buried underground under a 100 thousand years of sediment. When awake they seem to scavenge for food they don't need, but eat anyway. The fulgigas usually dress in scraps of leather and plant material and use giant tree trunks for clubs. They have humanoid faces with small beady black eyes, a wide jaw and mouth, short nose, and wide forehead. They have a habit of covering their faces with wooden masks for purposes unknown to researchers at this time.

They stand on average 30 ft tall and 12 tons. They seem to possess no known language and do not speak, not even to each other, but groan and vocalize and seem to have a dim understanding of Giant.

Combat[edit]

Simple and straightforward, the fulgigas hits things with a club until it dies. However, it knows enough of combat to stomp, vernestrike, and heavy impact when important. They are all variants of "hit it until it dies" after all. Many will cease a chase if opponents flee out of their territory.

Animal Mind: The fulgigas actually counts as having an Int of 2 for the purpose of interacting with spells and effects that have an intelligence threshold. They can also be taught tricks like an animal companion, which is generally the only reliable way to teach them something new. As a side effect, they add their Constitution modifier as a bonus against saves for mind-affecting effects.

Heavy Impact (Ex): As a full attack action, or as part of a charge, the fulgigas can make a single attack roll and on a successful hit gain a free bull rush attempt for free without provoking. If the check beats the opponent by 10 or more, they are also knocked prone.

Mountain Step (Ex): A fulgigas moves slowly but inevitabily. They have the dwarven ability to move in medium or heavy armor and under medium or heavy loads, are unaffected by difficult terrain, and cannot be slowed further than 1/2 their normal movement speed by any effect which slows but does not immobilize them. They could even move at 10 ft a round through solid fog or run.

Petrify: Over the course of 3 rounds a fulgigas can place themself in hibernation, falling asleep and turning to a stone-like state. In this state they are considered asleep but not helpless with hardness 8. Given enough time, the world may grow over them. In this state they automatically stabilize and recover a full night's rest of hp and ability damage each hour they rest. They may enter this state as an immediate action if brought below 0 hp but not yet dead. They can exit this stupor over 1 round and are dazed for 1 round after.

Poor Vision: The eyes of the fulgigas are weak and tiny. They take twice as many penalties to Spot checks as normal for distance, and take twice as long on Search checks. Their vision is blurry and creatures and small objects are usually unidentifiable until within 100 ft.

Rock Catching (Ex): Once per round, a fulgigas that would normally be hit by a rock can make a Reflex save to catch it as a free action. The DC is 15 for a Small rock, 20 for a Medium one, and 25 for a Large one. (If the projectile provides a magical bonus on attack rolls, the DC increases by that amount.) The fulgigas must be ready for and aware of the attack in order to make a rock catching attempt.

Rock Throwing (Ex): The range increment is 50 feet for a fulgigas’ thrown rocks.

Stomp (Ex): As a full attack action the fulgigas can make a single Slam attack against all creatures within its reach that are touching the ground. They take non-lethal slam damage and must make a opposed Balance check against 10 + 1/2 HD + Strength modifier (DC 27) or fall prone. However they can only use Stomp once every 1d4 rounds.

Tremorsight (Ex): Though nearly blind, the fulgigas shares a connection to the earth like no other. Even better than tremorsense, tremorsight provides no concealment for creatures in contact with the earth within 100 ft.

Vernestrike (Ex): A fulgigas can strike with terrifying power against prone or helpless targets. Once a round a successful attack against a prone or helpless target can send them flying into the air 60 ft high and up to 30 ft in any direction, dealing fall damage as appropriate. On a confirmed critical hit or a killing blow this distance is doubled, even if the creature is immune to critical hits.

Skills: A fulgigas has a +8 racial bonus on Climb checks. They can always choose to take 10 on Climb checks, even if rushed or threatened.
