The man's face seemingly melts into a blank, featureless slate; the entire body follows suit, even the clothes disappearing into a humanoid figure made entirely of clay. Its once-humanoid hand then shifts into the shape of a blade and it waits, as if inviting you to attack and see what surprises it holds in store.

Clay golems are scary. Imagine the T-1000 mixed with Samus Aran, and there you have it. About the size and shape of humans (at least at first), clay golems are extremely dangerous as they are able to mold their shape into pretty much anything of equivalent mass.

It is worth noting that even when transformed, the actual weight and mass of the golem does not change. So even when disguised as a human, it still weighs hundreds of pounds and can pummel the crap out of most people who would dare mess with it.

Combat[edit]

A clay golem may throw pieces of itself as ranged weapons, dealing damage as a shuriken appropriate for its size and applying its cursed wound ability. While this ranged option is available to it, the role it serves in a group of constructs is most often as ammunition, getting fired from catapults or hurled by a stone golem.

A clay golem may add its Dexterity bonus to attack and damage rolls as it pleases; these bonuses are accounted for in its stat block.

A transmute mud to rock spell has the added effect of slowing a clay golem for one round per level of the caster, while transmute rock to mud will haste it for an equivalent duration.

Cursed Wound (Ex): Specks of clay fester inside the wounds inflicted by a clay golem, causing such injuries to resist healing and continue to bleed. An opponent struck by a clay golem’s slam attack takes an additional 1 point of damage per CR it (the target) possesses on its next turn.

This bleeding damage cannot be restored by natural healing. A creature attempting to heal the damage magically must succeed on a caster level check (DC 10 + the golem's CR, DC 15 by default) when attempting to cast or have the spell become ineffectual.

Malleable (Ex): When struck by a melee attack, the golem can initiate a grapple against the creature that attacked it as an immediate action. If it successfully wins the grapple check, the damage it took from the attack is negated. If the golem wishes, it may instead voluntarily take the damage dealt and in return attempt to disarm the foe.

In addition, a clay golem is also capable of manipulating the contours and dimensions of its form, able to seep under or through solid surfaces at its normal movement speed as if it were a creature four size categories smaller than itself (normally Fine for a Medium golem).

Mimetic (Ex): As a swift action, the clay golem may replicate the effects of the alter self spell. It can use this ability to impersonate a living creature, but it is most often used to grant the golem wings, which are represented in its stat block.

Morph Ball (Ex): As a move action, a clay golem can assume the form of a perfectly spherical ball of clay. In this form, it is Tiny-sized, gaining all necessary statistical adjustments. In ball form, the golem cannot grapple (treat it as automatically losing all grapple checks), although it may take an immediate action when grappled to sprout spikes and deal 1d6 points of damage per CR of the golem (normally 5d6) to the grappling creature.

While in ball form, the golem can move up to twice its normal base speed. Its only attack in ball form is a single slam attack, but by using a swift action it may add the aforementioned damage bonus to this slam.
