Jack Short is a short halfling with long dirty brown hair, tan skin, and unassuming features save for a scar that dominates one side of his face.  He was a former guardsman who was always a troublemaker.  After a botched chased he fell off a cliff and was presumed dead, but had actually washed ashore where he was found by a tribe of hobgoblins who decided to take in the strangely short human as a curiosity.  Sensing opportunity, Jack used his guile to gain the tribe's trust and then used their muscle to obtain others gold, for he knew all the trading routes and the times the guards patrolled most.  As it turns out life as a bandit was more exciting and lucrative than life as a guardsman, and he soon became the cunning leader of the Twigsnap Bandits.

He benefits from the tribe's protection, for honestly he is not brave himself.  In combat he snipes from afar, striking at vital targets and creeping away with surprising and magically enhanced speed before he is found out.
