Legally Dead
Necromancy
Level: Assassin 4, Bard 4, Cleric 4, Sorcerer 4, Wizard 4
Components: V, S
Casting time: 1 standard
Range: Medium (100 ft. + 10 ft./level)
Target: 1 living creature
Duration: 1 round/level (D)
Saving Throw: None or Fortitude Partial, see text
Spell Resistance: Yes

With a flourish of your hands that resembles a heart monitor going to a flatline, you intone "Call it." The target clutches his chest and falls over, dead. However, a few rounds later the target's eyes snap open and he clambers back to his feet, shaken and pale. Wonder if he saw a bright light?

On failed save, the target of this spell dies. For all intents and purposes the target is dead, appears as dead to any check or spell that detects life. However, each round on the target's turn the target may make another fortitude save at the original DC. If the target succeeds or the spell's duration expires, the target is restored to life. Unfortunately, dead is dead, even if it was just for a few seconds. The target loses 50% (round down) of any prepared spells, spell slots, power points, readied maneuvers, and all limited-use Ex, Sp, Ps, or Su abilities they had at time of death. The target regains all hit points possessed at time of death, but keeps any additional damage the corpse took while dead (interestingly, while technically helpless when dead, the target cannot be coup-de-graced because it is already dead). If the corpse receives enough damage to reduce it below -10 hit points, it dies permanently and may no longer make saves to return to life. If between -1 and -9 hit points the target can still make fortitude saves each round to end the effect, but will not regain consciousness.

On a successful save, the target is instead dazed for 1 round. A target with less than 25% of it's maximum hit points takes a -2 penalty on their Fortitude save, being closer to actual death.

If used on a willing target, the duration of the spell changes to 1 minute per level. A willing target is not aware of their surroundings while legally dead, but if the corpse begins taking damage the target may return to life and end the spell as a standard action.
