A cat themed spellcaster prestige class. Fear the kittehs! 10 5 Poor Poor Good Good Prepared Arcane Spellcasting, Spontaneous Arcane Spellcasting, Prepared Divine Spellcasting, Spontaneous Divine Spellcasting Full

Nekomancer

Oh, NEKOmancer. That explains the cats, and the lack of skeletons...
—Sharon, confused adventurer., Records of the Cat Invasion

"Fear me, for I am cute and fluffy!"

It's a fact; cats are adorable. Even though they are selfish, arrogant, snarky, and even stupid sometimes people seem to love them. It was only natural for spellcasters to unlock the secret mysteries of cats in a way only humanoid creatures can, by obsessing over them until they have created an abomination out of themselves.

Becoming a Nekomancer

Though technically any spellcaster can enter this, the nekomancer seems to jive most with charismatic spellcasters.

Class Features

All of the following are class features of the Nekomancer.

Spellcasting: At each level, you gain new spells per day and an increase in caster level (and spells known, if applicable) as if you had also gained a level in a spellcasting class to which you belonged before adding the prestige class level. You do not, however, gain any other benefit a character of that class would have gained. If you had more than one spellcasting class before becoming a nekomancer, you must decide to which class to add each level for the purpose of determining spells per day, caster level, and spells known.

Cat Spells: The nekomancer gains a number of cat themed spells which are automatically added to their spellbook or spells known list when they gain spell slots for the spell levels below. If the nekomancer already has one of these spells known, they can choose a different spell of the same or lower level.

Cat Spells
Spell Level Spells
1st enfluffen
2nd pizizzap's bothersome allergen
3rd curse of cacophonous chorus
4th cat pile
5th baleful polymorph (felines only)
6th proximity to cat
7th animal shapes (felines only)
8th mass charm monster
9th bearpocalypse (as felines)

Familiar Companion: The nekomancer's animal companion or familiar is improved. Animal companions now gain familiar benefits as well, while familiars gain animal companion benefits, as a creature of their master's character level.

Magic Claws (Ex): The nekomancer is no fighter, but they are not harmless when unarmed. They gain two claw attacks as natural weapons, dealing 1d4 points of damage for Medium creatures. The claws bypass DR/magic, and channel spells easily. As a result, the nekomancer can cast and use touch spells in melee without provoking attacks of opportunity, or may make a single melee attack and cast a touch spell in the same standard action.

Speak with Cats (Sp): The nekomancer may use speak with animals (felines only) at will.

Wild Empathy (Ex): The nekomancer has wild empathy as a druid of their character level, but only with feline creatures. This is not limited to animals, but covers any feline creature with no penalty.

Cat Call (Su): A 2nd level nekomancer can call forth swarms of kittens to do her bidding. Once per day as a standard action, they call forth 1d6+1 kitten swarms (treat as rat swarms), except they lack the disease ability and instead deal 1 daunt level when a creature fails a save. Their save DC for distraction and daunt levels is 12 + your Charisma modifier. These creatures arrive in 2d6 rounds and serve the nekomancer for up to 1 hour.

Feline Spell: A 2nd level nekomancer gains Physical Spell metamagic, and may apply them to their spells without level adjustment or increasing the casting time. However, it always deals nonlethal damage as it converts all spell effects into fluffy kittens. If you take on its level adjustment and increased casting time, you can choose to deal bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing lethal damage from the clawing and biting.

Cat Fall (Ex): A 3rd level nekomancer can survive long falls without problem. You may ignore up to 1 dice of damage from falling per HD, up to becoming immune to fall damage at 20 HD.

Cat Shape: A 3rd level nekomancer can take the shape of any feline creature as if using the wildshape ability of a druid of their level including the number of wildshape attempts they receives, limitations on size and type, and duration. This counts as wildshape for the purpose of pre-requisites.

Cat Chain Spell: A 4th level nekomancer can bounce their spellcasting off friendly cats in the area. If a friendly feline creature is in the range of a spell, they may use the cast as the origin point for their spellcasting, even if this would normally put her out of range. You require line of effect to the feline you are chaining off of.

Evasion (Ex): A 4th level nekomancer gains evasion, like a monk.

Wide Area Meow (Su): A 5th level nekomancer can make a loud meow out calling to all feline creatures a 5 mile area as a standard action. They can communicate any message they want up to a paragraph in a single yeowl, and the message is delivered regardless of language (or lack of it). It doesn't guarantee any co-operation, but those who receive the message can choose to immediately meow back with a reply subject to the same limitations.

A nekomancer can do this up to Charisma modifier per round (minimum 1).

Feline Exclusion: A 6th level nekomancer can choose to exclude any feline creatures from their spell effects as a free action, allowing the nekomancer to use blasting spells even over their own feline allies without any harm.

Adorable Sanctuary (Sp): The 7th level nekomancer may cast sanctuary on themselves or a feline creature as an immediate action due to their incredible adorableness. A nekomancer can do this up to Charisma modifier per round (minimum 1).

Improved Evasion (Ex): A 7th level nekomancer gains improved evasion, like a monk.

Greater Cat Chain Spell: A 8th level nekomancer can chain off multiple cats at a time. In theory, with a line of cats in a row you can bounce a single spell to the other end of the world, assuming you know what you are targeting over there.

Herd Cats: A 8th level nekomancer gains rebuke as a cleric, but for feline creatures, and feline creatures take a -4 penalty on any charm or compulsion effects cast by the nekomancer. Lastly, feline creatures start out one step more friendly, to a maximum of Friendly.

Nyanomachine Swarm (Ex): A 10th level nekomancer is not merely a kitten, they are kittens all the way down. They become immune to critical hits and sneak attacks, and they may assume gaseous form at will. If reduced to 0 hp, they are immediately transformed into gaseous form, with temporary hp equal to half of their maximum hp. Lastly, they gain fast healing 5 as the slowly knit themselves back together.

Campaign Information

Playing a Nekomancer

Combat: The nekomancer is a spellcaster first, and so can't reasonably be seen on the front lines. Even so, they do have their claws as backup for threatening and, more importantly, pulling off touch attacks in melee. Most will choose to stay in the sidelines of course, and bounce spells off their cats.

Advancement: Nekomancers advance in classes which promote spellcasting.

Resources: Supposedly there are many nekomancers on some kind of supernatural "world wide web", some demiplane which is curiously not spider related at all. However, no one can confirm if this is true.

NPC Reactions: Those crazy cat ladies are at it again.

Nekomancer Lore

Characters with ranks in Knowledge Nature can research nekomancers to learn more about them. When a character makes a skill check, read or paraphrase the following, including information from lower DCs.

Knowledge Nature
DC Result
10 Nekomancers, predictably, are host to a series of cat themed spells, and have the claws and nimbleness of a cat themselves.
15 Nekomancers are not only friends to felines, they can use them to bounce spells off them and can communicate with them at long range.
20 Powerful nekomancers are difficult to fight. Not only are they adorable, but even if you kill them they'll probably just explode into an adorable pile of cuteness or something.
30 Those that reach this level of success can research specific nekomancers, their favorite type of cat, cat food, litter brands, and cat toys. Oh, and probably useful trivia as well.

Adaptation: Instead of cats, perhaps dogs. Enter the Dogevoker.

Sample Encounter: That crazy cat lady is craaaazy, and now her over-abundance of cats is spilling out everywhere!
