A weathered skull rises in front of you, wreathed in unnaturally hued flames that form the vague visage of a face. It screams and lunges at you in rage!

The nix is the weakest of all the soul eating maita, taking on the form of a skull (often human, sometimes animal) with subtle eldritch marks carved into its calcified form. When awake and alert, a small dim light shines in the darkened eye sockets as it floats around for easy prey. Scavengers, they pick up the souls of the recently dead and erupt into full flame, the trapped soul tormented and imprisoned. The nix is satiated only until it finds a more powerful soul to devour, a process which mercifully ejects the previous soul. Nix are gluttonous and craven beings, short sighted and ever-looking for their next meal.

A nix is about the size and weight of a skull, and only vocalizes in screams. It seems to understand Abyssal and Infernal, and can be found all over the lower planes. It sometimes go by the name of a Screaming Soul.

Combat

Nix know they are weak, so they hang out on the sides of battlefields and pick off weak or dying creatures as they come, quickly fleeing at first sign of resistance.

Devour Soul (Ex): As a standard action touch attack, the maita can consume the soul of a creature which has perished within 1 minute, storing it within themselves. They automatically do this as a free action with no touch attack if they are the one who slew the creature. A devoured soul remains with the maita's body and the creature cannot be revived by anything short of true resurrection, miracle, wish, or a limited wish to release the soul followed by any valid revival attempt. Alternatively the death of the maita releases all consumed souls.

Flaming Body (Ex): The Nix is wreathed in fire, all of its natural attacks deal 1d6 fire damage (with a soul), or 1d4 damage without. This damage is multiplied on a critical hit.

Scream (Su): The scream of a Nix can shock and deafen, but only when you don't expect it. As a standard action the Nix can scream at all flatfooted targets in 30 ft and deal 1 point of sonic damage (no save), and a DC 13 Fortitude save against deafening for 1 hour, save negates. Against non-flatfooted creates it only deals 1 sonic damage. If it is ambushing an opponent, it usually opens with a scream, or if it is finishing off a weak opponent. The save DC is Constitution based.

Sudden Charge (Ex): The Nix can charge unusually fast. It does not provoke attacks of opportunity for movement or entering enemy squares whenever it makes a charge, or runs.

Familiar

A Nix can be selected with the Improved Familiar feat for evil spellcasters 7th level and above.
