Ongul's Wrath

Ongul's Wrath uses the Functional Weapons of Legacy variant rule.

The young boy who lost everything. The great warrior brought low by trickery. From beginning to end, mighty Ongul could only perceive the world through a haze of blood and fire, destined to never recognize where his wrath should be pointed until his own flesh and blood became one with the flame.

This old and battle-worn two-handed axe is colored a dark bronze from endless tempering by blood and flame, and carries within it the wrathful embers of a legendary barbarian warrior of ancient times. To most wielders, Ongul's Wrath is effectively an ordinary +1 greataxe, although its heft requires a Strength score of at least 19 to wield without an improvised penalty. Only when its wielder flies into a rage does the true power of the weapon erupt forth, transforming the wielder's rage into a hot, burning flame that threatens to consume him.

Ongul's Wrath is a unique magic item, on its way to becoming an artifact. While it has a price, it cannot be completely destroyed. If reduced to 0 hp, it instead falls inert in a broken condition and is unable to be used until repaired, but it is not destroyed as items usually are. It is treated as an artifact against the effects of mage's disjunction.

All effects below that are based on spells use an effective caster level equal to your barbarian level or base attack bonus, whichever is higher. Save DCs are Strength based.

Omen: When used by a wielder that experiences a form of rage, the axe becomes wreathed in glowing embers and the wielder's voice becomes disembodied, as if carried and distorted by a raging flame.


1st Ritual (Ongul's Disfavour)

Ongul's Disfavour (Su): The seething wrath that sleeps within the axe grabs hold of your rising anger, subverting your barbarian rage into something more dreadful. While you are raging, your body ignites, dealing damage to you at the end of every turn equal to your effective HD. In turn, you deal extra fire damage on every melee attack equal to your Strength bonus. You gain resistance to fire 10. The damage inflicted on you by this ability cannot be resisted. While its wielder rages, Ongul's Wrath becomes an effective +2 weapon.

Obstinate Fury (Ex): While raging, you cannot be staggered.

One-Dimensional Tyranny (Su): When performing a single move action and moving only in one direction without turning, you may move an additional 20 feet. During any such straight-line movement, you gain the effects of the Improved Bull Rush and Improved Overrun feats. If you already have one of or both of these feats, the bonus doubles to +8.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +3, must have killed three opponents in the space of one barbarian rage.

Cost: 6,100 gp, 244 XP.


2nd Ritual (Ongul's Indignation)

Ongul's Indignation: When raging, you gain all the effects of Ongul's Disfavour, and furthermore project a fire shield effect (warm variant). The added fire damage on every attack becomes 1d6 + your Strength bonus and your resistance to fire becomes 20. The damage inflicted on you by this ability cannot be resisted.

While its wielder rages, Ongul's Wrath becomes an effective +3 weapon.

Unrelenting Fury (Ex): While raging, you cannot be staggered or stunned.

Spiteful Blow (Su): As a standard action while not raging, you may perform an attack action with Ongul's Wrath that carries all the bonuses and added effects of your rage.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +6, wielder must have either bull rushed for at least 15 feet or rendered prone two different opponents in a single encounter. Opponents must be at least your CR −3.

Cost: 14,400 gp, 576 XP.


3rd Ritual (Ongul's Vehemence)

Ongul's Vehemence (Su): When raging, you gain all the effects of Ongul's Indignation, and you also leave a trail through every square you move through that lasts for 2 rounds and functions like a wall of fire that lacks the heat wave effect. Your resistance to fire becomes 30. The damage inflicted on you by this ability cannot be resisted.

While its wielder rages, Ongul's Wrath becomes an effective +4 weapon. The weapon's enhancement bonus outside of rage increases to +2.

Unstoppable Fury (Ex): While raging, you cannot be staggered or stunned and have freedom of movement.

Flameblast (Su): While raging, you may perform a single melee attack with Ongul's Wrath as a standard action. The fire damage dealt by this attack is doubled and affects everything within a 20-foot-radius spread of the attack's target. Creatures caught in the area may make a Reflex save to halve the damage dealt, but a creature hit directly by the attack is not allowed a saving throw.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +9, wielder must have killed two different opponents with retributive fire damage in a single encounter. Opponents must be at least your CR −3.

Cost: 26,000 gp, 1,040 XP.


4th Ritual (Ongul's Rancor)

Ongul's Rancor (Su): When raging, you gain all the effects of Ongul's Vehemence, and all melee attacks performed with Ongul's Wrath carry the flameblast effect, except that the radius is 10 feet and the fire damage is not doubled. The added fire damage on every attack becomes 2d6 + your Strength bonus and your resistance to fire becomes immunity to fire. The damage inflicted on you by this ability still cannot be prevented.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +12, wielder must have the greater rage class feature and killed three different opponents with a single attack. Opponents must be at least your CR −5.

Cost: 44,000 gp, 1,760 XP.


5th Ritual (Ongul's Revenge)

Ongul's Revenge (Su): When raging, you gain all the effects of Ongul's Rancor, and furthermore all creatures that take at least 1 point of fire damage from your attacks and effects continue burning until extinguished, as per alchemist's fire.

While its wielder rages, Ongul's Wrath becomes an effective +6 weapon. The weapon's enhancement bonus outside of rage increases to +3.

Eternal Fury (Ex): While raging, you are under the effects of haste and freedom of movement, cannot be staggered, stunned or slowed, and are immune to compulsions.

Obliterating Cleave (Su): While raging, you may perform one single melee attack with Ongul's Wrath as a full-round action. If the attack hits and the target is not immune to fire, it must make a Fortitude save or be slain outright and utterly consumed by Ongul's flames of rage. Even if the target succeeds on the saving throw, it still takes double damage from the attack and is similarly destroyed if the damage is enough to kill or destroy the target. Using this ability ends the rage.

A creature slain by this ability cannot be resurrected except by true resurrection.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +15, wielder must have killed two different opponents at least 30 feet apart with melee attacks in a single round. Opponents must be at least your CR −5.

Cost: 85,000 gp, 3,400 XP.


Final Ritual (Ongul's Wrath)

Awakening (Ex): The spirit of Ongul that indwells the axe awakens, causing it to become fully realized. All of the fire damage dealt by Ongul's Wrath ignores resistance to fire, and half this damage bypasses enemy immunity as well, but not your own. You are also unaffected by, and can walk on, lava. The added fire damage on every attack becomes 3d6 + your Strength bonus

Once Ongul's Wrath is fully realized, you gain access to the awakened abilities listed below. All of these abilities can only be used while raging and expend daily uses of the rage class feature.

Undying Fury (Ex): While raging, you are under the effects of haste and freedom of movement, cannot be staggered, stunned or slowed, and are immune to compulsions. Finally, while your rage is active you cannot be killed, however once your rage ends, if your hit points are below your lethal threshold you instantly die.

Pre-Requisites: BAB +18 or wielder must have the tireless rage class feature. Wielder must have used Obliterating Cleave to destroy a CR 20 opponent in battle, either through the opponent failing the saving throw or succumbing to the damage of the attack.

Cost: 140,000 gp, 5,600 XP.


Awakened Abilities

These abilities can be used only during a barbarian rage and expend 1 or more unused rages per day. If insufficient rages per day are remaining, use of one of these abilities also ends your currently ongoing rage.

Obliterating Cleave (Su): As the same ability above, except instead of ending the rage you simply expend 1 of your unused rages per day to perform it.

Avatar of Wrath (Su): By expending 2 of your unused rages per day as a standard action, you may call into being a massive entity of wrathful flame. This being is treated as an elder fire elemental with the benefits of the Augment Summoning feat, and furthermore wields a Huge-sized manifestation of Ongul's Wrath that deals pure fire damage. It gains Ongul's Wrath's enhancement bonus to its attack, damage and Armor Class, and is hasted. This is a summoning effect and lasts until your currently ongoing rage ends.

Ongul's Becoming (Su): By expending 2 extra rages per day as a swift action at the start of your rage, you can truly become like the legendary Ongul himself. You come under the effect of righteous might, except that the damage reduction/alignment the spell would normally grant becomes DR/- that stacks with the damage reduction from your barbarian class. The fiery trail you leave behind you with Ongul's Vehemence is likewise enhanced, becoming a lava trail (see Lava Effects, except that it deals 6d6 points of damage per round of exposure). The area of effect of your flameblasts is likewise turned to lava. This ability lasts until your rage ends.

Ongul's Unmaking (Su): By expending all of your unused rages per day as a 1-round action, you release all of the wrathful energy that Ongul's Wrath has accumulated in an empowered, maximized and widened nine acre fire spell. After using this ability, your rage ends and Ongul's Wrath becomes inert for one week, returning to an ordinary +3 greataxe.
