Pactcraft (Int; Trained Only)[edit]

A skill that involves knowing how pact magic works, how vestiges operate, and what the vestiges are like. It represents knowledge of how pact magic works and the vestiges that fuel it.

Pactcraft DC Task
5 + vestige level Identify a single vestige whose sign is being displayed openly, even if it's just a minor detail, when the subject is cooperating with your inspection. (You must be able to see the binder and see or hear the sign.) Requires a full-round action, and you must be within 5 feet. Retries are allowed. Note that this check automatically fails if the subject is, in fact, not a binder, or has no vestiges bound.
10 + vestige level Identify a single vestige whose sign is being displayed openly, even if it's just a minor detail, when the subject is not cooperating with your inspection. (You must be able to see the binder and see or hear the sign.) Requires a full-round action, and you must be within 5 feet. Retries are allowed. Note that this check automatically fails if the subject is, in fact, not a binder, or has no vestiges bound.
10 + vestige level Identify a single vestige whose sign is being displayed openly with just a quick glance, but only if the sign entails a drastic, easily spotted change in appearance or easily heard auditory effect. (You must be able to see the binder and see or hear the sign.) No action required. No retry. Note that this check automatically fails if the subject is, in fact, not a binder, or has no vestiges bound.
10 + vestige level Identify a single vestige whose sign is being displayed, but concealed, even if it's just a minor detail, when the subject is cooperating with your inspection. (You must be able to see the binder and see or hear the sign.) Requires a full-round action, and you must be within 5 feet. Retries are allowed. Note that this check automatically fails if the subject is, in fact, not a binder, or has no vestiges bound.
15 + vestige level Identify a single vestige whose sign is being displayed, but concealed, with just a quick glance, but only if the sign entails a drastic, easily spotted change in appearance or easily heard auditory effect. (You must be able to see the binder and see or hear the sign.) No action required. No retry. Note that this check automatically fails if the subject is, in fact, not a binder, or has no vestiges bound.

15 + vestige level Identify a single vestige whose sign is being displayed openly with just a quick glance, even if it's only a minor detail. (You must be able to see the binder and see or hear the sign.) No action required. No retry. Note that this check automatically fails if the subject is, in fact, not a binder, or has no vestiges bound.
20 + vestige level Identify a single vestige whose sign is being displayed, but concealed, with just a quick glance, even if it's only a minor detail. (You must be able to see the binder and see or hear the sign.) No action required. No retry. Note that this check automatically fails if the subject is, in fact, not a binder, or has no vestiges bound.
20 + vestige level Identify a single vestige whose sign is being suppressed when the subject is cooperating with your inspection. (You must be able to see the binder.) Requires a full-round action, and you must be within 5 feet. Retries are allowed. Note that this check automatically fails if the subject is, in fact, not a binder, or has no vestiges bound.
25 + vestige level Identify a single vestige whose sign is being suppressed when the subject is not cooperating with your inspection. (You must be able to see the binder.) Requires a full-round action, and you must be within 5 feet. Retries are allowed. Note that this check automatically fails if the subject is, in fact, not a binder, or has no vestiges bound.
30 + vestige level Identify a single vestige whose sign is being suppressed with just a quick glance. (You must be able to see the binder.) No action required. No retry. Note that this check automatically fails if the subject is, in fact, not a binder, or has no vestiges bound.
15 + vestige level Rush a binding check from 1 minute to a full-round action without taking the usual −10 penalty to the binding check. No action required. No retry.

Failing this check worsens the penalty to the binding check from −10 to −(10 + 1/2 amount you missed the Pactcraft check by, rounded up) (so, for instance, missing this Pactcraft check by 3 or 4 would result in a −12 penalty to the binding check).

10 + vestige level Rush drawing a vestige's seal to a full-round action (rather than 1 minute). Drawing the seal still provokes attacks of opportunity. No retry. Failing this check ruins the seal and wastes the materials used to draw the seal.
15 + vestige level Draw a seal for a vestige that can remain usable for up to 24 hours, plus 24 more hours for every 5 points by which you beat the check DC. Takes 1 minute (just like drawing a seal ordinarily). No retry. Failing this check ruins the seal and wastes the materials used to draw the seal.
25 + vestige level Draw a seal on a piece of paper, papyrus, or similar material that would be suitable for writing a scroll. Takes 1 minute (just like drawing a seal ordinarily). No retry. Failing this check ruins the seal and wastes the materials used to draw the seal (including the scroll paper, which is now covered with a misshapen, useless seal and is no longer suitable for making scrolls unless somehow blanked (such as by the erase spell)).

A seal drawn on scroll paper by making this Pactcraft check becomes a scroll that, when read by a binder, summons that vestige. (Essentially, it becomes a one-time-use seal of the spirit.) Reading a scroll to summon a vestige is a full-round action. Once read, the writing on the scroll vanishes, just like a scroll used to cast or learn a spell.

20 + vestige level Identify an ongoing effect of a vestige-granted ability. You must be able to see or detect the effects of the vestige-granted effect. No action required. No retry.
10 + vestige level Identify a vestige's seal. One try per day. Requires a full-round action.
25 + vestige level After rolling a saving throw against a vestige-granted ability targeted on you, determine what that vestige was. No action required. No retry.
30 + vestige level Learn a synopsis of the backstory of a vestige. Requires at least 1 day of research (but probably will take much, much longer than that).
50 + vestige level Learn a reasonably accurate (if lacking in detail) version of the backstory of a vestige. Requires at least 1 week of research (but probably will take much, much longer than that).
80 + vestige level Learn the true backstory of a vestige. Requires at least 1 month of research (but probably will take much, much longer than that).
Check[edit]

You can identify vestiges and seals and research vestiges' histories. You can also make a Pactcraft check to help you draw a vestige's seal and/or make a pact with it, though you do not actually need a Pactcraft check to do so. The DCs for Pactcraft checks relating to various tasks are summarized on the table above.

Check Modifiers[edit]

When identifying vestiges, increase the DC by 5 when attempting to identify all vestiges on a single binder or a single vestige on multiple binders simultaneously, and apply only the greatest vestige level to the DC. Increase the DC by 10 when attempting to identify all vestiges on multiple binders simultaneously, and apply only the greatest vestige level to the DC. Use the base DC of the sign that is the most difficult to identify. If the check fails, you cannot identify any of the vestiges.

You can rush a 24-hour or scroll-drawn seal to a full-round action, but this imposes a −5 penalty to your check.

If a vestige has a special summoning requirement that entails drawing the seal on a surface other than paper, papyrus, or some other substance suitable for writing a scroll on, the Pactcraft DC for drawing its seal as a scroll is increased by 10. Likewise, if a vestige has a special summoning requirement entailing where its seal is drawn or what you use to draw it, the Pactcraft DC for drawing its seal as a scroll is increased by 10 unless you can meet that requirement. If you have the Ignore Special Requirements feat, this clause does not apply to you.

You get a +2 bonus to Pactcraft checks relating to drawing a vestige's seal if you have the Scribe Scroll feat.

Epic Check[edit]

You can learn the backstory of a vestige in great detail.

Action[edit]

Varies, as noted above.

Try Again[edit]

Varies, as noted above.

Classes[edit]

In addition to homebrew classes, Pactcraft is a class skill for clerics, binders, anima mages, knights of the sacred seal, scions of Dantalion, tenebrous apostates, and witch slayers.

Synergy[edit]

If you have 5 or more ranks in Pactcraft, you get a +2 bonus on Spellcraft, Knowledge (the planes), and Knowledge (religion) checks.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Pactcraft, you get a +2 bonus on binding checks.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Knowledge (history), you get a +2 bonus on Pactcraft checks made to research a vestige's backstory.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Knowledge (the planes), you get a +2 bonus on Pactcraft checks.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Knowledge (religion), you get a +2 bonus on Pactcraft checks.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Spellcraft, you get a +2 bonus on Pactcraft checks.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Sense Motive, you get a +2 bonus on Pactcraft checks made to identify a vestige when the enemy binder is under that vestige's influence.

If you have 5 or more ranks in Spot, you get a +2 bonus on Pactcraft checks made to identify a vestige when the enemy binder is displaying that vestige's sign, even when they are keeping it concealed. (No, that's not an oxymoron; read the Tome of Magic for details.)
