"Hovering quietly upon a silver dish, she sat, legs and arms crossed, dressed in white gossamer. The wind shifted and we caught the smell of ointments and perfumes. The dogs, unnerved, began to bay. Her pale figure turned to face us and we knew the horror of her face. Her three mouths opened and in horrid unison the air rippled with a shattering cacophony."

Originally the product of magical tampering by cultists to create a creature capable of sending messages and relaying information, the ritual to create them has spread and they've gained in popularity among those willing to distort the body and will of a humanoid subject into such a creature as a tool. Through their own determination to live, pale maidens develop a strong will.

A withered pale maiden is a distorted, incomplete creature. It's body is pale and hairless. It often has malformed limbs and a contorted, lopsided figure. Extra mouths or eyes may form on its body and limbs. Its hands and fingers are often malformed and in unusual amounts and proportions. They suffer a –4 attack roll penalty when using manufactured weapons. Only as it grows in strength does it gradually pull itself together from its transformation.

A pale maiden has pale white skin, is totally bald, has four arms (often held in poses of concentration) and mouths in place of eyes. Despite not having eyes, a pale maiden sees just fine.

A pale maiden augurer is much like her lesser sisters, but has six arms.

When traveling, they are often seen sitting in dish-like silver discs, though some are known to stand, typically draped in ceremonial robes and anointed with sacramental oils

Pale maidens do not normally speak intelligibly, but do understand Common and any racial languages of their creators.

Skills, Feats & Modifiers[edit]

A withered pale maiden has 4 ranks each in Escape Artist, Listen, Move Silently, Spot and Survival.

A pale maiden has 6 ranks each in Concentration, Escape Artist, Listen, Move Silently, Spot and Survival.

A pale maiden augurer has 9 ranks each in Concentration, Escape Artist, Listen, Move Silently, Spot and Survival with 7 ranks Intimidate.

  • A pale maiden has a caster level equal to her HD.
  • A pale maiden with a 3rd eye ratnagarbha has an additional +4 resistance bonus on Will saves against illusions.
  • Force Armor (Su): A pale maiden generates a supernatural form of mage armor around herself.
  • Vital Tenacity: Whenever stable while dying, she gains fast healing equal to her Con modifier (+2 pale maiden, +3 pale maiden augurer) until she's raised to 1 hp. She restores her nonlethal damage first.
  • Skill Muse: A pale maiden gains skill points based on Charisma instead of Intelligence.
  • Ability Focus: A pale maiden augurer gains a +2 bonus to the DC of her Horrid Wail special attack.

Special Equipment[edit]

3rd Eye Ratnagarbha: A pale maiden grows this round green gem from her forehead upon reaching 4 HD. The gem grants her a +4 resistance bonus on saves against illusions. It has the drawback of rendering a –2 penalty to Charisma when used by other creatures. Placing the gem against the forehead causes it to gently sink in, occupying the face magic item body slot. They are occasionally found in marketplaces and are worth 2,000 gp.

Silver Disc: A pale maiden uses a polished silver disc as a focus for her hover ability. The discs, roughly four feet across, weigh about 25 pounds and are worth 125 gp.

Combat & Special Qualities[edit]

Nonlethal Conversion (Ex): A pale maiden converts half of the damage dealt to her into nonlethal damage. She recovers 1 point of nonlethal damage per minute.

Hover (Su): Pale maidens and pale maiden augurers have a hover speed. To use this ability, the pale maiden must use a polished silver disc as a material focus as a platform for her body.

Flood of Thought (Su): As a melee touch attack, a pale maiden may empty a deluge of telepathic thought into a creature. The target becomes dazed and must make a Will save or suffer a 1d4 penalty to Wisdom, which lasts for 1 minute since the last penalty was applied. If she maintains contact with the target, she may communicate telepathically with it, allowing silent communication between them, so long as the creature has at least 3 Intelligence. A pale maiden can willingly forgo subjecting the creature to the Wisdom penalty.

Sad Cry (Ex): A pale maiden can cry out a mournful lamentation as a swift action. All creatures within a 60 foot radius of the pale maiden suffer a −1 morale penalty on attacks, saves, skills, ability DCs and ability checks unless they make a Will save (DC 10 + 1/2 her HD + her Charisma modifier). To be affected, a target must be able to hear her cry and lasts for as long as the target hears the cry. Sad Cry is an extraordinary mind-affecting ability. Pale maidens are naturally resistant to this attack. This penalty overlaps with that of other sad cries.

At 4 HD (and every 4 HD after) this morale penalty increases by 1, to −5 at 16 HD.

Horrid Wail (Ex): A pale-maiden can belt out a horrid cacophony as a standard action. All creatures within a 60 foot cone take 1d6 [Sonic] damage per her HD. Pale-maidens are naturally resistant to this attack. A Fortitude save reduces the damage by half. The save DC is 10 + 1/2 her HD + her Charisma modifier.

Gibbering (Su): If threatened, she begins a constant gibbering as a free action. All creatures within a 60-foot spread must succeed on a Will save or be affected as though by a confusion spell for 1d2 rounds. This is a [Sonic] mind-affecting compulsion effect. A creature that successfully saves cannot be affected by another pale maiden's gibbering for that round. The save DC is 10 + 1/2 her HD + her Charisma modifier. Pale maidens are naturally resistant to this ability.

Sound Breaker (Su): A pale maiden augurer, as a standard action can loose a piercing lance of maddening sound as a ranged touch attack with a range of 100 feet + 10 feet per HD. If the lance strikes an area of silence, she may make an opposed check (1d20 + 1/2 her HD + her Charisma modifier) against the DC of the spell. If she wins, the area of silence is shattered and creatures within are dealt 2d6 [Sonic] damage per her HD and are dazed for 1 round. A creature struck directly by the sound lance is dealt 2d6 [Sonic] damage per her HD and is dazed for 1 round. A Fortitude save negates the dazing effect. The save DC is 10 + 1/2 her HD + her Charisma modifier. She must wait 1d4 rounds before this ability is ready to use again.

Spell-Like Abilities: At will: sending, standard action. message, swift action. clairaudience/clairvoyance, full-round action, augurer only. divination, full-round action, 3/day augurer only. Caster level equal to HD.
