A land crab with mushrooms on its back digs into the ground, looking for tree roots. Powders are sprinkled over its back.

Paras are tiny crabs that migrated onto the land a long time ago, and as a species have since become infested with parasitic mushrooms. The mushrooms benefit the Paras to an extent by driving off predators, but ultimately it's a losing situation for the bug host, as they gradually take over its mind and body as it ages.

Combat

Paras usually avoid direct confrontation against able opponents, instead paralyzing threats and then draining their precious bodily fluids to feed the all-demanding fungus growing within them.

Leech Life (Su): A Paras's bite inflicts 1d4 points of negative energy damage on any living creature. The Paras also heals an equal amount of damage. If the Paras would heal more hit points than it currently has damage, it gains the difference as temporary hit points which last one hour.

Stun Spore (Ex): Creatures who remain within 10 feet of a Paras for 2 consecutive rounds are exposed to Stun Spores unless they do not breathe during that period (either because they do not normally breathe or because they voluntarily hold their breath). Paras can suppress or resume this ability as a free action. This ability does not affect the originating Paras, though it does affect other Paras in the area as normal.

Stun Spores are an Inhaled poison with 1d6 Dex initial and secondary damage. The save DC for the sample Paras is 13, and is Constitution-based.

Fire Vulnerability (Ex): Paras' body is incredibly effective at burning. Paras takes a -10 on saving throws against Fire effects. If an effect doesn't allow a saving throw, Paras simply takes double damage and is sad.

Skills: Paras have a +8 racial bonus on Climb checks and can always choose to take 10 on Climb checks, even if rushed or threatened. Paras use their Dexterity modifier instead of their Strength modifier for Climb checks.
