A phoenix crane is a rare and mythical bird. A cousin of the powerful phoenix, the phoenix crane shares many of its abilities. Like the phoenix, the phoenix crane is immortal and will start the process of rebirth upon dying. They possess a high affinity for fire, being immune to it and employing it extensively for self-defense. Because of their immortality, most phoenix cranes are solitary and only reproduce once per 10,000 years. They hold vast territory they protect against large animals, but leave humanoids alone unless directly provoked. They typically live close to shallow bodies of water, where they fish for their sustenance.

CombatEdit

Being a piscivorous bird, a phoenix crane dislikes engaging in a fight, it would rather intimidate any intruder in its territory. If directly provoked by a lesser foe, the phoenix crane will typically deliver a single crane kick and send its attacker flying, dead or alive. If a foe is persistent it will avoid pushing it away with its crane kick to deliver a full-attack. If really threatened the phoenix crane will fly and use its lava plume ability to defend its territory. A mother defending eggs or young will be notably aggressive and use lava plume at the drop of a hat. A non-threatening creature, which includes most humanoids, can approach a phoenix crane as close as 20 feet before the bird takes notice.

Crane Kick (Ex): A phoenix crane's talon attack deals bludgeoning, piercing and slashing damage and the phoenix crane add twice it Strength modifier to the damage of an attack made with it talon attack. On a successful talon attack, the phoenix crane can attempt a free Bull Rush with a +8 racial bonus, this does not provoke an attack of opportunity. The phoenix crane does not move alongside the target of its bull rush, no matter the distance the target is pushed.

Flaming Feathers (Su): All melee attacks made by a phoenix crane deals an extra 2d6 fire damage.

Lava Plume (Su): As a standard action 3 times per day, a phoenix crane can sacrifice one its feather to create a powerful thermal explosion within 60 feet. The phoenix crane may attempt a ranged touch attack against a creature within that range, dealing 6d6 fire damage if successful or target an empty square. After the attack is resolved, miss or is targeted at a square the feather explodes in a 10-ft radius 60-ft high column centered on the target creature or square. All creatures caught in the area take 10d6 fire damage, with a DC 21 Reflex save for half damage, including the initial target if any. The DC of this ability is Charisma-based.

Rebirth (Ex): When the phoenix crane reaches 0 hit points, it immolates, causing every creatures within 20 feet to take 6d6 fire damage and catch on fire (a successful reflex save halves the damage and prevent catching on fire). This ability leaves an egg behind. The egg has 40 hit points and has a hardness of 20. Within 1d4+1 minutes, the egg hatches, revealing a phoenix crane at full hit points with all positive and negative status effects removed from it. If the egg is destroyed, the phoenix crane is slain forever.
