Another headless adventurer. We arrested the innkeeper, but adventurers keep coming to the inn and when their friends wake up... boom, headless rogue. We can't explain these mysterious murders. People keep coming here though, I hear their pillows are really comfortable.

The pillow ooze is an insidious slime which takes on the form and texture of the most comfortable softest pillow you have ever slept on. Indeed, they rarely move on their own and most don't notice they've laid their head down on a pillow ooze until they wake up, paralyzed, with the back end of their skull melted into slag. The power of the pillow ooze lies not in strength of arms or skin of steel, but the element of surprise. Indeed it may be better to view the pillow ooze as a deadly trap than a creature of a straight up fight.

The pillow ooze lies on beds, taking the shape and appearance of surrounding pillows within a minute. It won't react unless injured, or the creature it is feeding on escapes, or it is otherwise found out. Larger well fed pillow oozes have even been known to take other forms, typically known as Couch Oozes, Bed Oozes, and the like.

It may kill you, but the pillow ooze really is quite comfy.

Combat[edit]

The pillow ooze lets tired adventures fall asleep on it, then applies its sleeping paralysis as it grapples the opponent's head and slowly eats them. Sleeping creatures might wake up, but even if they do they're usually too paralyzed to do anything about it. If caught in a straight up fight it will toss itself at random opponents until no longer surrounded and in danger.

The pillow ooze is soft, it deals nonlethal damage with its slam attacks.

Acid (Ex): A pillow ooze secretes a digestive acid that dissolves only flesh. Any melee hit or grappling deals 1d4 acid damage.

Disguised (Ex): A pillow ooze has a +20 bonus on Disguise checks to appear as some manner of cushion.

Hide in Plain Sight (Ex): A pillow ooze has the Hide in Plain Sight ability of an assassin, but only in environments with pillows, bedsheets, and other soft cushions.

Sleep Paralysis (Ex): A pillow ooze secretes an anesthetizing slime. A target hit by a pillow ooze's melee attack or in extended contact with one (such as sleeping upon or in a grapple) must succeed on a DC 16 Fortitude save of fall asleep (if not already). A sleeping creature which awakens (usually due to the burning acid damage) gains another save. If they fail, they go back to sleep. If they are successful they remain awake but remain paralyzed for 1 round, which may result in them failing the next save and falling back asleep. A second consecutive successful save negates the paralysis. The save DC is Constitution-based.

Toss (Ex): As a full attack action the pillow ooze can make a Jump check, and launch itself a number of feet equal to its result (round down to the nearest 5 ft increment, minimum 5 ft). It can make a single attack along this path and if successful the pillow stops its movement in the creature's square. This movement provokes attacks of opportunity as normal. The Jump result may exceed its movement speed, unlike a normal jump check.

Skills: Pillow Oozes have a +8 bonus on Jump checks, and a +10 bonus on Hide checks while in environments with pillows, bedsheets, and other soft cushions.
