A tiny colored geometric shape drifts through the air like a particle of dust. Suddenly it lights up glowing bright orange and diamond shaped, proclaiming "YES!" ...in the distance, a second one of these beings forms red spikes with a resounding "NO."

Born from an ancient conflict of Chaos and Law, pixels were the end result of feywild energies granting life to Mechanus mathamatics (or perhaps Mechanus trying to understand the chaotic feywild). The result was an abomination to both realms, a "logical fairy" which manifested as a binary being, able only of understanding and communicating in YES or NO, THIS or THAT, with no in between.

Pixels are little more than sentient math given geometrical shape and a random color it switches to between it's opposite, such as black and white or orange and blue. Its default shape is a flat square, but it seems to be able to take any number of shapes. It is barely intelligent and does not need to eat, sleep, or breathe. It spends most of its time in a state of passive observation and curiosity, following any action going on in the area and staying just out of the danger zone. Because they are little more than harmless light they are usually tollerated as a harmless pest.

When pixels get together, their minds link and their intelligence grows. This collective conciousness allows them to produce more and more complex thought and action. This pleases the pixel, but these arrangements are often short lives as any one pixel is too random and spontaneous to fit into a logical whole. Each time swarms disperse and are re-created, the new swarm has little to do in personality as the old one, and retains none of its memories. Rarely these swarms do not bleed out over time but instead grow larger and larger until they hit critical mass and collapse into a dense ball of math, forming a pixelmind.

In their base single state, a pixel is of animal intelligence but is still able to communicate via the language of Binary. In truth, it merely picks up the words for YES and NO in the local dialect of the area they haunt. They have no meaning to language beyond a positive or negative response. In swarms, multiple pixels announce YES or NO at once, with one side usually drowning out the other. Swarms can be quite noisy.

A pixel is the size of a fly, and weighs effectively nothing.

Combat

Pixels do not engage in combat, and have effectively no attacks. They are at the mercy of others, or what hazards they can set up with mage hand.

Pixel swarms are enough in number to deal damage, and able to distract beings easily. They are also intelligent, which depending on the personality of the formed swarm may give it new and dangerous options in fighting. Specifically pixelmind swarms perfer to make use of their difficulty to be hit by kiting opponents into more dangerous situations, then distracting them when they need to focus most.

Collective Conciousness (Ex): When two or more pixels enter the same 10 foot space their minds link up, increasing their Intelligence and Charisma with an enhancement bonus. The bonus is +1 with 2 pixels, +2 with 4 pixels, +3 with 8 pixels, +4 with 16 pixels, and so forth. For example, the swarm has an average of 16,384+ pixels, giving it a +14 to Int and Cha.

Distraction (Ex): Any living creature that begins its turn with a pixel swarm in its space must succeed on a DC 16 Fortitude save or be nauseated for 1 round. The save DC is Constitution-based with a +2 racial bonus.

Immunities (Ex): Pixels are immune to critical hits and sneak attacks, disease, mind-affecting effects, and poison.

Rejected by Chaos and Law (Ex): Old grudges die hard, and the pixels still find no shelter within chaos or law. They count as the least beneficial alignment (chaotic or lawful) whenever possible, regardless of their actual alignment.

Semi-Incorporeal (Ex): Math does not have much substance it seems. The pixel may pass through solid matter as if it were incorporeal. However it remains corporeal for all other effects.

Spell-Like Abilities (Sp): At will- detect magic, mage hand. 2/day- augury. 1/day-hypnotic pattern (swarm only). The save DCs are Charisma based.

Familiar

Pixels can be bound as familiars. It gives no extra bonus, though its spell-like abilities prove useful.

Pixel Swarms can be taken as an Improved Familiar at 7th. However, they can be struck by physical attacks as if they were Tiny (taking 1/2 damage). If reduced to 0 hp, it transforms into a 1 hp normal Pixel. If it survives, it returns to swarm status after 24 hours.
