This animal is a small amphibian with sticky pads on its feet. Its skin is brightly colored in reds, blues, yellows, and oranges.

The statistics presented here represent a wide range of brightly colored, poisonous frogs.

Combat[edit]

Poison dart frogs rely on their bright coloration to warn off predators. Any who don’t get the message are subjected to their deadly poison.

Bright Skin (Ex): A poison dart frog’s brightly colored skin is meant to warn predators of its poison, potentially helping it to avoid being eaten. A creature that spots a poison dart frog is entitled to a DC 5 Wisdom check to realize that the frog is poisonous. Animals and most other creatures that succeed this check will not bite or attempt to eat a poison dart frog.

Poison (Ex): Ingested, Fortitude DC 14, initial and secondary damage 2d6 Con. The save DC is Constitution-based and includes a +4 racial bonus.

Skills: Poison dart frogs have a +8 racial bonus on Climb and Jump checks. A poison dart frogs can always choose to take 10 on a Climb check, even if rushed or threatened. A poison dart frog uses its Dexterity modifier instead of its Strength modifier for Climb checks.

A poison dart frog has a +8 racial bonus on any Swim check to perform some special action or avoid a hazard. It can always choose to take 10 on a Swim check, even if distracted or endangered. It can use the run action while swimming, provided it swims in a straight line.

Due to their bright coloration, poison dart frogs have a –10 racial penalty on Hide checks.

Poison Dart Frogs as Familiars[edit]

A poison dart frog may be selected as a familiar. Its master is not at risk of poisoning himself when applying poison.

Poison Dart Frog Toxin[edit]

A character can extract the poison of a dart frog with a successful DC 14 Survival check. On a successful check, the character extracts a single dose worth of the poison. On a failed check, the poison is ruined but the character suffers no ill effects unless they roll a natural 1, in which case they are exposed to the poison while attempting to extract it. A poison dart frog can supply only a single dose of poison per week.

Dart frog poison is less deadly when extracted, dealing an initial and secondary damage of 1d4 Constitution damage, with a DC 12 Fortitude save to resist the effects. Poison dart frog toxin has a market price of 130 gp.
