A small round purple pudgy creature, something like a cross between a penguin, a pufferfish, and a kobold, comes waddling at you on short needle-like legs, and waving its flippers covered in sharp shining scales. Its eyes shine an eerie red as it starts dancing around, shooting sharp blade-like scales everywhere.

Strange aberrations believed to have been built as some kind of bio-weapon, popperpens are weird round creatures that are covered in protective, and sharp, scales which flake off easily. Their clawed flippers act like scimitars, and their round bodies are mostly hollow, with vents around the crown of its head and base of its hips which puffs of air and smoke sometimes escape. They are intelligent yet dim witted, usually following whatever strongest member of their kind, or strongest bully outside of their kind, without question. Though they have a self preservation instinct, it is overridden by love of their boss and will commit suicidal acts, for the most dangerous aspect about them is the nature of their death. Death usually ends in an explosion of hellfire, which spreads spores around the area. Unless the spores are purged with acid, they will regrow the popperpen. In greater numbers than before. Thus the real danger is not the popperpen, but cleaning up afterwards to prevent an infection.

Popperpens speak common and a distorted form of ignan. They stand about 3 feet tall and weight a very light 20 lbs.

Combat[edit]

Popperpens are effective in melee, but do best with range by either rapidly attacking with its scales and rapid shot, or throwing alchemical bombs against creatures whose AC they cannot hit. They must take care that they are not too close together on death, lest they cause a chain reaction among their own ranks.

Popperpens usually default to their natural weapons, but do have hands and are actually proficient in simple and martial weapons, light armor, and shields (including tower shields). They cannot use the scales on that flipper if that flipper is holding a weapon.

Alchemical Bomber (Ex): The explosive brew within their bodies collect on the inside of their skin and form small hard explosive beads. These beads can be drawn from the popperpen (see stomach of holding) and thrown as an standard action with a range increment of 30 ft, and they explode in a small 10 ft radius fireball, 6d6 fire damage, DC 18 Reflex save for half. They can use their bombs 1/day per HD (6/day). The saving throw is Constitution based.

Explosive (Ex): Popperpens are highly explosive. Taking more than 20 fire damages causes the popperpen to explode in a 10 ft radius ball of flame centered on them, dealing 6d6+6 fire damage, with a DC 18 Reflex save for half. If this kills them, they explode again for the same damage. They also explode when reduced to -1 hp. They also explode when intentionally thrown to explode. They also explode sometimes on their own as a standard action. An exploded popperpen is reduced to a cloud of spores which settle in a 15 ft square around its point of death. If these spores are not treated with at least 3 points of acid damage, 1d4 new popperpens will respawn in this area within 3 days. The saving throw is Constitution based.

Inflatable (Ex): The popperpen can inflate its body to appear larger and scarier as a swift action. It counts as a creature once size larger (including increased damage from its scales), but its speed is cut in half and confirmed critical hits cause it to explode immediately (see explosive). It can also deflate its body as a swift action. It's move speed drops to 5 ft and it is prone, but it is able to slip under cracks as small as 1 inch tall and 1 ft wide.

Because the popperpen is mostly hollow, it only takes a maximum of 1d6 nonlethal damage from falling.

Rocketeer (Ex): Popperpens can ignite the vapor which emit from their head and hip vents, rocketing forward at high speed. They duplicate the "flight" of rocket boots. Fuel is unlimited but it can only be done once every 1d4 rounds.

Rough Skin (Ex): An agitated popperpen is difficult to touch. Any creature making unarmed strikes, natural attacks, or grappling the popperpen takes their scale damage each time they strike the popperpen. Popperpens can suppress this ability as a non-action.

Scale Wind (Ex): Popperpen scales are sharp and flake off easily. The popperpen can throw their scales with a range increment of 30 ft. In addition, they may enhance the scales on their flippers and body as if they were manufactured weapons or light armor.

Stomach of Holding (Su): The source of the popperpen's seemingly endless explosive vapors arises from folded space deep within. This space can also hold objects the popperpen swallows. Every popperpen effectively has a handy haversack.
