Pseudolich[edit]

A sort of lesser lich, they respawn but lack true immortality and many lich powers. At least they retain some semblance of life.

Products of those who failed to achieve lichdom yet survived, or sometimes intentionally made as lesser spawn to an actual lich, the pseudolich is a being who has grasped the power of rejuvenination through undead but failed to break the hold of death, for the pseudolich still suffers from the rigors of time and will one day age and die. Thus the pseudolich is usually considered a failed state of being. However for some pseudolichdom is but a stepping stone to acquiring actual lichdom. If they complete their transformation ritual, they can qualify for the actual lich template with only the remaining +3 level adjustment applied.

As they are only partly corrupted by death, pseudolichs remain looking as they did in life, if not more unhealthy, gaunt, or pale. They do not rot, and in fact can pass for the living just fine. This makes them excellent infiltrators for undead overlords who seek minions whose survival is guaranteed to bring them back. However most pseudoliches seek to become something more than their current state.

Creating a Pseudolich[edit]

Pseudolich is an acquired template that can be added to any living creature (referred to hereafter as the base creature), provided it can create the required phylactery.

Size and Type[edit]

The creature’s type changes to Undead with the Unliving subtype. Do not recalculate base attack bonus, HD, saves, or skill points.

Armor Class[edit]

The pseudolich gains a +2 bonus to natural armor.

Special Attacks[edit]

Necrotic Touch (Su): As a standard action any living creature a pseudolich hits with its touch attack takes 1d6 points of negative energy damage per two levels, with a Will save for half damage. The DC is 10 + 1/2 HD + your highest mental ability modifier.

Special Qualities[edit]

Turn Resistance (Ex): A pseudolich has +4 turn resistance.

Damage Reduction (Su): A pseudolich’s undead body is tough, giving the creature damage reduction 5/bludgeoning or magic. Its natural weapons are treated as magic weapons for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction.

Pseudolich Unliving Traits: In addition to the unliving traits, pseudoliches are not immune to mind-affecting effects. In addition they are not immortal; they continue to age as normal and can die of old age though they age at half their normal rate. They do not need to eat, sleep, or breathe but still desire to do so and suffer from discomfort from hunger and thirst, even if it does not harm them.

Resistances (Ex): Pseudoliches have resistance to cold and electricity 10. They also gain a +4 on saves against polymorphing and mind-affecting effects.

Abilities[edit]

-2 Con, +2 any mental ability score.

Skills[edit]

Pseudoliches have a +4 racial bonus on Hide, Listen, Move Silently, Search, Sense Motive, and Spot checks. Otherwise same as the base creature.

Challenge Rating[edit]

1

Alignment[edit]

Usually any evil.

Advancement[edit]

As base creature.

Level Adjustment[edit]

The Pseudolich’s Phylactery[edit]

An integral part of becoming a pseudolich is creating a magic phylactery in which the character stores its life force. As a rule, the only way to get rid of a pseudolich for sure is to destroy its phylactery. Unless its phylactery is located and destroyed, a pseudolich reappears 1d10 days after its apparent death.

Each pseudolich must make its own phylactery, which requires the Craft Wondrous Item feat. Unlike a normal lich phylactery there is no minimum caster level, and it costs only 12,000 gp and 480 XP to make and has a caster level equal to that of its creator at the time of creation.

The most common form of phylactery is a sealed metal box containing strips of parchment on which magical phrases have been transcribed. The box is Tiny and has 40 hit points, hardness 20, and a break DC of 40. Other forms of phylacteries can exist, such as rings, amulets, or similar items.

Unlike a normal lich's phylactery, their respawning ability comes upon a common condition set on creation such as being exposed to moonlight, submerged in water, bathed in flames, or being wielded by the living if an item such as a sword. The respawning ability of the pseudolich thus begins once the condition is met, and it can be suppressed if removed from its condition.

If the pseudolich attempts to become a lich, they may use their pseudolich phylactery as part of the ritual subtracting the cost from any creation, and halving its cost (thus a total value of 72,000 gp and 2880 xp), and only requires a minimum caster level of 8th. They gain the properties of a lich which overrides the properties of this template, though they retain the necrotic touch ability.
