Rexus

I'm a motherfuckin' T-Rex! The Rexus were a rare mutation of tyrannosaurus rex, the result of infiltration of a fungus that mutated and ended up bonding with the animal, enhancing it to sapience and altering its genes. Though this early awakening to intelligence occurred, the vast majority perished with the end of the dinosaurs as a whole. A scant few escaped through being frozen, magical manipulation, or other events and ended up surviving towards the modern age.

Personality

The instinct of the rexus may be dulled with intellect, but it is still strong. It leads to personalities which seem egotistical and antagonistic, challenging others and fighting for pecking order. However, these shows of force tend to be little more than show. In terms of actual violence, other more humanoid species such as orcs have them beat. Since they tend to be big and scary and this works to their advantage, rexus tend to make it a secret that they are all bark and less bite.

Physical Description

Rexus are mutated tyrannosaurus rexes, whose genes made them smaller, smarter, with slightly more nimble arms. Of course, smaller in this case is still pretty large. In this case, they are actually just under large size, the size of a pony or a small horse. In spite of their reptilian nature, they are warm blooded creatures. Though they breed true with normal t-rexes, additional rexus species are only guaranteed in a pairing between two rexuses. Their skin comes in various earth tones, with occasional patches of feathers in any color in place of one where one might expect hair. Their teeth are powerful, and replaced often as their teeth often receive wear and tear.

Rexus are meat-eaters. They are both predators and scavengers, always willing to take a meal when offered.

Relations

Rexuses are a nearly extinct race. Their numbers, already rare, took a serious hit in ages past and they never quite recovered. Rexuses are generally difficult to work with due to their nature of pushing around shows of power and importance, but they have had to moderate themselves in order to get along with others, and others of their kind.

Alignment

Rexuses tend to be true neutral, but can be any alignment.

Lands

Rexuses used to walk the primeval lands of the world upon fern-covered plains.

Religion

Rexus civilization was never developed enough to establish any form of religion, leaving most to adopt simple animism and similar belief systems.

Language

In the modern age, rexus have picked up Common to communicate with others easiest. They also speak a strange form of Draconic consisting mostly of roars and clicks.

Names

Rexus names are usually based on what others call them, due to their lack of numbers producing a lack of civilization.

Racial Traits

  • +2 Strength, -2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence: Strong and powerful, but perhaps a bit too heavy set and not too smart.
  • Magical Beast (Reptilian): Rexuses are modified dinosaurs, with fungus-altered brains.
  • Medium: As a Medium creature, a rexus has no special bonuses or penalties due to its size.
  • Rexus base land speed is 40 feet.
  • Darkvision: A rexus can see in the dark up to 60 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and a rexus can function just fine with no light at all.
  • Low-Light Vision: A rexus can see twice as far as a human in starlight, moonlight, torchlight, and similar conditions of poor illumination. She retains the ability to distinguish color and detail under these conditions.
  • Scent (Ex): Rexuses have scent
  • Feral Strike Bite (Ex): Rexuses have a feral strike (bite). With powerful build, it deals 2d6 damage for their size.
  • Monstrous Body: Rexus have a hunched over monstrous body, and thus wear barding instead of normal armor. They may also take Monstrous feats. They have all the normal body slots. Lastly, due to their nature they may take the Large Size and Huge Size feats as if they were fiends. If they change size categories, they are considered (long) creatures.
  • Natural Armor: Rexuses have a +1 natural armor bonus.
  • Powerful Build: The physical stature of rexuses lets them function in many ways as if they were one size category larger. Whenever a rexuses is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as during grapple checks, bull rush attempts, and trip attempts), the rexuses is treated as one size larger if doing so is advantageous to him. A rexuses is also considered to be one size larger when determining whether a creature’s special attacks based on size (such as improved grab or swallow whole) can affect him. A rexuses can use weapons designed for a creature one size larger without penalty. However, his space and reach remain those of a creature of his actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject’s size category
  • Roar (Ex): Rexus can roar as a standard action, making an intimidate check against everyone in a 60 ft cone. Intimidate is always a class skill.
  • Tiny Arms: Rexus have longer arms than normal for their kind, but they are still pretty small. Their claws are blunted for more nimble hands able to wield items and weapons, but the reach of said weapons is reduced by 5 ft (to a minimum of 0 ft) and the size of the weapons you wield is one size smaller than normal instead of one size larger. Lastly, if they fall prone it takes a full round action instead of a move action to stand up, due to tiny arms.
  • Automatic Languages: Common, Draconic
  • Bonus Languages: Any (except secret languages)
  • Favored Class: Barbarian
  • Level Adjustment: +0
  • Effective Character Level: 1
