Certain races are intrinsically more powerful than others, either because they possess racial hit dice or because they have powerful abilities.  ECL exists to balance this out sacrificing [[hit points]], [[base attack bonus]] [[saving throw]] bonuses and class abilities for higher ability scores and special abilities.

What It Is

Your effective character level is the number used when calculating how many experience points you receive when defeating challenges, and how much experience you require to reach the next level.

How it is calculated

Effective character level is calculated by adding your total racial hit dice, class levels and Level Adjustment. Members of the standard races have an ECL that equals their character level.

The material in this box is either SRD content from other sections or inferences drawn from SRD material in other sections. It should not be considered part of the core SRD, and is added only for clarity.
