Shadow Plushie[edit]

Shadow plushies are animated dolls born from the Plane of Shadow. They haunt the rooms of others, spooking for entertainment.

It is said that there was once a colony of eijilund plushies who were experimenting with planar gates, only to have their own colony sucked into the plane of shadow. Resilient as they were, life on the plane was short and hard, and the plane began to change them. Soon, the factories only produced plushies spun of shadowskin and cores of ghostly pale white flame which shed no light. Thus were born the shadow plushies, tainted by darkness, lurking between rays of light.

Personality[edit]

While the normal eijilund plushie might be considered peppy, maniacal, or insane, most have a fairly jovial and good-natured (or good-intentioned) air about them. Not so much for shadow plushies. They still joke and act with passion and gusto, but their minds tend to darker aspects, specifically finding amusement and pleasure in fear. Like unseele to the seele fey, they've taken upon themselves the mantle of darkness and run business spooking children in the night. The kind among them only seek to do this as a prank, but the more sadistic really enjoy this job too much. Above all, shadow plushies enjoy affecting the world while keeping quiet on who is pulling the strings, and they can and will go above and beyond in plotting, a rare plushie trait, to achieve these chaotic ends.

Physical Description[edit]

Shadow plushies are 1'-2' tall animated dolls of various make, from humans to teddy bears, though always humanoid form. However, instead of cotton they are stuffed with shadowstuffing and wrapped in darkness, their skin appearing to be an oily black blot against the background, and eyes and mouth aglow with pale flame. They seem unusually light for their size, who are already light for being so small. As eijilund plushies, their arms end in nubs, though they do not have any problem picking up or manipulating objects though they lack true fingers. Many sport wicked grins and sinister smiles to complete the look.

Shadow plushie reproduction is currently unknown. While the traditional factory method works, sometimes shadow plushies seem to spontaneously spawn out of the darkest corners of the multiverse.

Relations[edit]

The shadow plushie strives to be unnoticed until the last moment, for the best scares can be had then. If noticed, the scare may be ruined but they might find allies who will aid them in their plots. Most races believe shadow plushies to be legend, the tales of children. The children know better.

Alignment[edit]

Shadow plushies are almost universally chaotic, and many trend towards non-good or evil alignment.

Lands[edit]

Shadow plushies are native to the Plane of Shadow, and take no penalties from being on it. They can see normally in the darkness of the Plane of Shadow. Rumor has it there is an entire shadow plushie city somewhere there, the remains of the original colony.

Religion[edit]

Shadow plushies are still spawned from Lord Eiji and many respect him, but find his status as a sun god conflicting with the whole darkness thing.

Language[edit]

Common and Plushese.

Names[edit]

Shadow Plushies, as all plushies, come with serial numbers which are used between them. For other races, they adopt whatever nicknames they have been bestowed.

Racial Traits[edit]

  • -4 Strength, +2 Dexterity, -2 Constitution: Their small size and unreal bodies do not give much for durability, but they can squeeze and flex beyond what reality would offer them.
  • Construct (Cold, Living Construst, Plushie): Though their bodies burn with flame, their flames run cold with the chilling darkness of the shadow plane.
  • Small: As a Small creature, a Shadow Plushie gains a +1 size bonus to Armor Class, a +1 size bonus on attack rolls, a –4 size penalty on special attack (bull rushes, grapples, overruns, and trips) checks, and a +4 size bonus on Hide checks, but it uses smaller weapons than humans use, and its lifting and carrying limits are three-quarters of those of a Medium character.
  • Shadow Plushie base land speed is 30 feet.
  • Darkvision: A 90 can see in the dark up to 90 feet. Darkvision is black and white only, but it is otherwise like normal sight, and a Shadow Plushie can function just fine with no light at all.
  • Light Fortification (Ex): Lacking actual organs is a boon. A plushie has a 25% chance to negate a critical hit.
  • Frozen in Fear (Su): Shadow Plushies can shock flatfooted creatures with a surprise grab and wave of chilling miasma. At will, the shadow plushie makes a touch attack which deals 1d6 cold damage + 1 damage per HD, and the creature must make a Will save or be shaken for 1 round/level, save negates the shaken effect but not the damage. This is a mind-affecting illusion (shadow) effect and the saving throw is Charisma based. For the purposes of feats, this count as an eijilund plushie's go boom ability.
  • Lighting Dependency (Ex): Shadow Plushies have a -2 penalty on saves against magic with the Light and Shadow descriptors.
  • Living Construct Traits (Ex): Unlike other constructs, plushies have a constitution score. As a living construct it does not gain bonus hit points by size, but rather through constitution as other living creatures. They do not have low-light vision, and are not immune to mind-influencing effects. They have an immunity to poison, sleep effects, paralysis, disease, sickening, nausea, fatigue, exhaustion, and energy drain. They cannot heal damage naturally, and take half benefit from positive energy cure spells. However they take full benefit from the repair series of spells. They are subject to critical hits, effects requiring a Fort save, death from massive damage, nonlethal damage, stunning, ability damage, ability drain, and death and necromancy effects. When reduced to 0 hit points, a living construct is disabled, just like a living creature, and when its hit points is less than 0 and greater than -10 it is inert. It is unconcious and helpless, but stable. They may be raised and ressurrected as normal, and have no need to eat, sleep, or breathe, though they may benefit from consumables. Though they do not need to sleep, they must still rest for 8 hours before preparing spells, as normal.
  • Magical Lifeforce: Dispel magic and antimagic fields have a negative effect on plushies. When hit with any dispel magic, make a Will saving throw vs becoming fatigued (or exhausted if they were already fatigued). An antimagic field incurs a save vs exhaustion every round until they leave the area, and mage's disjunction becomes a save vs sleep. These effects bypass their usual immunities due to race. Plushies know the power magic cancellation has on them and fear it.
  • Phantom Concealment (Ex): Whenever a plushie would obtain concealment due to darkness, the miss chance also applies to magical and other effects. When in the dark or out of sight, sometimes the shadow plushie doesn't quite exist.
  • Slight Build (Ex): The physical stature of plushies lets them function in many ways as if they were one size category smaller. Whenever a plushie is subject to a size modifier or special size modifier for an opposed check (such as Hide), the plushie is treated as one size smaller if doing so is advantageous to the character. A plushie is also considered to be one size smaller when "squeezing" through a restrictive space. A plushie can use weapons designed for a creature one size smaller without penalty. However, the space and reach of a plushie remain those of a creature of their actual size. The benefits of this racial trait stack with the effects of powers, abilities, and spells that change the subject's size category.
  • Shadow Plushies gain a +4 bonus on Move Silently checks, and a +6 bonus on Intimidate checks. Intimidate is always a class skill.
  • Spell-Like Ability (Sp): 1/day- darkness.
  • Automatic Languages: Common, Plushese.
  • Bonus Languages: Abyssal, Aquan, Auran, Gnome, Halfling, Sylvan, and Undercommon.
  • Favored Class: Rogue
  • Level Adjustment: +0
  • Effective Character Level: 1
