Shadowfade Sickness
Infection: Inhaled
DC: 20
Incubation : 1d8 days
Damage : 10% Reality Loss (see below)

Shadowfade sickness is a rare supernatural disease which can be picked up by passing through occasional "fogs" found on the plane of shadow. These thin hazes do little more than mute the contrast of light and shadow, but sometimes they carry this disease. Those which are infected begin to sublimate into the plane of shadow, crossing the planar borders to do so. When a creature fails a save against shadowfade sickness, they become 10% less "real", gaining discolored dark blotches and a dimly translucent appearance. All attacks, physical or otherwise, against someone with shadowfade sickness suffer a 10% miss chance, but subsequently so do any beneficial effects, and all of the creature's attacks, spells, and other actions suffer a 10% miss chance. Only force effects and other transdimensional effects can strike without the associated miss chance.

Each subsequent failed save increases the reality loss by 10%, and each successful save decreases it by 10%. To cure shadowfade sickness, creatures at 0% reality loss must succeed on three consecutive saves to heal from the disease. Remove disease reduces the miss chance by 10% with each casting, or cures it if they are at 0% reality loss, and is subject to the miss chance of shadowfade sickness as normal.

If a creature hits 100% reality loss, they sublimate into haze onto the plane of shadow, effectively dead. If a creature reaches a plane which is not connected to the plane of shadow, the disease effects are suppressed for the duration, but the disease continues, possibly reaching 100% reality loss (which means if they return anywhere coterminous to the plane of shadow, they will immediately perish).

The DC for shadowfade sickness increases by +2 in shadowy illumination, and +4 in total darkness. The DC is decreases by −2 in bright light such as daylight, or −4 in blindingly bright light.
