Singing cats appear to be normal household or stray cats but possessed of a certain intelligence and a habit of singing. Singing cats are mimics of anything with a rhythm, and while they are incapable of speech they are capable of a wild varieties of meows, purrs, and chirping sounds to duplicate complex audio patterns beyond the human scope. They are a favored familiar for bards, but are sometimes known as a pest. Vengeful singing cats will gather a troupe to yowl outside the houses of those who have wrong them, driving them slowly mad.

Singing cats understand, but cannot speak, Common and any language local to their area.

Combat[edit]

Singing cats are not much better in combat than a normal cat, but their bardic music abilities can bolster others to fight in their steed. They are not above adopting strong creatures through cuteness and guile specifically as a form of protection.

Bardic Music: The singing cat has the bardic music ability of a bard of its HD.

Lucky Charm (Ex): The singing cat is known for its luck, and adds its Charisma modifier to its AC as a luck bonus. In addition it tends to collect coins either through theft, casual luck, or generosity from creatures during its performances. Most are found with 3d3 gp in their lair.

Thundering Hairball (Ex): 2/day, the singing cat can cough up a gross but hardened sphere at an opponent as an attack action. Treat this as a thunderstone. These stones, besides being gross to the touch, degrade after 1 hour.

Yowl (Ex): The singing cat can intentionally sing poorly to others detriment. All beings other than cats that hear the creature’s yowling for an hour or longer are subject to its effect, though it does not help the singing cat in combat. Anyone within hearing range of a singing cat for a full hour must succeed on a DC 15 Will save or take 1 point of Wisdom damage. Two consecutive failures also applies the penalties of The Barkening flaw with no bonus feat for as long as they hear the yowl and 1d4 days after. This is considered a curse, and may be removed with remove curse. The save DC is Charisma-based. The save must be repeated for each hour of exposure. This is a sonic mind-affecting effect.

Familiar[edit]

A singing cat can be selected as a familiar with a minimum CL of 5th and the Improved Familiar feat. As a familiar, it's Lucky Charm ability generates 1 gp per HD of the master, but this money is quickly lost at the end of the day, effectively only granting a 1 gp per HD discount on purchases per day. It offers a +2 bonus on Perform checks, and if its master has bardic music it increases the benefit of Inspire Courage by +1.
