Slaughter Devils are surprisingly clever and tactical, but their purpose is single-minded and focused.  They forgo direct attacks only when they know of a way to make its target suffer or die in a more humiliating, better way.  A slaughter devil will not rest until their targets know the true extent of their burning, irrational hate for them.
