It's often applied to helmets or eyewear, but any item can grant its ability.  The user can see where a creature perished recently, appearing as a glowing stain over the place they died in even if the body has been moved or destroyed.  If concentrated on for 3 rounds, they can determine the HD of the dead creature and if they were familiar to the user they also divine who died here, but no other information.  These death stains exist for no more than 3 days, and you can tell how long it has been since they died within the timeframe of an hour.

Places which are "haunted" or otherwise have been subject to mass slaughter may leave a much more permanent stain that lasts for years and years.  You cannot tell the timeframe beyond 3 days, but you can determine the location is a place of mass death or possible haunting.

You are capable of seeing [[SRD:Ghost|ghosts]] (but no other ethereal creature) as if you had ''[[SRD:See Invisibility|see invisibility]]'' and could see the ethereal plane.
