Features

Incorporeal Movement. The specter can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. It takes 5 (1d10) force damage if it ends its turn inside an object.

Light Sensitivity. While in bright light, the specter has disadvantage on attack rolls, as well as on Wisdom (Perception) checks that rely on sight.

Innate Spellcasting. The specter is an 18th-level spellcaster. Its spellcasting ability is Intelligence (spell save DC 18, +10 to hit with spell attacks). The specter may cast the following wizard spells requiring no material components: [2]

Cantrips (at will): mage hand, prestidigitation, toll the dead
1st level (4 slots): detect magic, magic missile, shield, thunderwave
2nd level (3 slots): Aganazzar's schorcher, detect thoughts, invisibility, mirror image
3rd level (3 slots): animate dead, counterspell, dispel magic, fireball
4th level (3 slots): black tentacles, dimension door
5th level (3 slots): cloudkill, scrying
6th level (1 slot): disintegrate, create undead
7th level (1 slot): crown of stars, teleport
8th level (1 slot): dominate monster, feeblemind
9th level (1 slot): invulnerability

Turn Resistance. The specter has advantage on saving throws against any effect that turns undead.

Uncanny Resistance (1/Day). If the specter fails a saving throw, it can choose to succeed instead.

Actions

Life Drain. Melee Spell Attack: +10 to hit, reach 5 ft., one creature. Hit: 15 (3d6+5) necrotic damage and the spectre magi regains half [3] this many hit points. The target must succeed on a DC 18 Constitution saving throw or its hit point maximum is reduced by an amount equal to the damage taken and the target is cursed. The reduction lasts until the curse is removed and the creature finishes a long rest. If the target is reduced to 0 hit points while under this curse the target dies, and its spirit becomes a specter.

Bonus Actions

Aura of Fear (Recharges on 6). As a bonus action the spectre creates an aura of fear with a radius of 60 ft. All non-undead creatures in the aura must succeed on a Wisdom saving throw (DC 18) or become frightened of the spectre for 1 minute. Affected creatures may attempt another save at the end of each of its turns, negating the effect on a success.

If wizard fails the ritual to become a lich it may become a spectre magi (destroying its corpse and spellboook in the process). The spectre magi retains all of its memories and personality.

Incorporeal. The spectre is incorporeal and must succeed on a Strength check to manipulate objects. But being incorporeal grants it immunity to nonmagical physical attacks.

Growing Hunger. The spectre has a hunger for the life energy of living creatures. This hunger is mild at first but constantly grows until the spectre drains life energy from the living. By the third day, if it has not done so, the hunger is undeniable - driving it to seek sustaining life energy even in daylight against overwhelming odds. It need not kill its victim, but must perform at least one Drain Life within this period or it is destroyed at sunrise of the fourth day.

Undead Nature. A spectre doesn't require air, food, drink, or sleep. It does not age.

  3. Rule Tip: Round Down. Whenever you end up with a fraction in the game, round down, even if the fraction is one-half or greater, unless a rule explicitly tells you to round up. - Player's Handbook (5e) p.7, UA 2020 Subclasses Part 3.
