This tiny blue mote of light seems to obscure a small naked humanoid figure which glows. It carries a tiny pen the size of its body, and you swear it was wearing glasses...

(Generally) useful spirits, spelling faeries populate ancient libraries and other sources heavy in text, floating through the books and shelves and correcting typos and errors as they come across them. This is a good thing most of the time, though the faeries are not perfect and due to a poorly written word, aged text, or cultural misunderstanding they sometimes put in the wrong words and make a garbled mess out of things. Seemingly malicious unseelie spelling fairies are so known that they are usually referred to "that damn autocorrect", referring to their mysterious text correcting powers.

Spelling faeries speak Sylvan, Common, and usually Draconic, a favorite language of wizards.

Combat[edit]

A spelling faerie doesn't like combat, and barely understands it. When pressed into a fight it relies on its aura of misspell to disrupt casters, and its semi-incorporeal nature and DR to slow down fighting types long enough to run away. Its ethereal pen makes a crude and absurdly tiny lance in a pinch, but as they say the pen is mightier than the sword. Supposedly. Their magic pen vanishes with them when they die.

Aura of Misspell (Su): When threatened, a spelling faerie can release its stockpile of erroneous words. All creatures in 30 feet must make a Will save or fall under misspell for as long as they remain in the area, and 1d4 rounds after they leave. The save DC is 13, and the save is Charisma based.

Autocorrect (Su): When encountering misspelled text, a spelling faerie can alter the word as a standard action with a range of touch, reformatting the surrounding text on all subsequent pages as needed. Against magical text they must make an opposed caster level check to succeed, and they have a +3 on their check (their HD with a +2 racial bonus).

Comprehend Languages (Su): A spelling faerie is always under the effect of comprehend languages.

Scan Text (Su): A spelling faerie can read unnaturally fast. They can read the entire contents of a book as a 1 round action, no matter how long it is.

Semi-Incorporeal (Ex): A spelling faerie can fade in and out of reality. In combat, they have a constant 20% miss chance which is not bypassed by true seeing, as it is closer to blink in how it works. Out of combat, they can phase through solid matter at half speed, up to 5 feet deep. They mostly use this to enter inside books and access all the pages at once for the purpose of using autocorrect. Because they control how much of themselves is actually there, they can see up to 5 feet of the objects they are melded with.

Sense Typos (Su): A spelling faerie can make a Sense Motive check, DC 15, against any book or text they can see. Without even reading it, a successful check tells them if there are spelling errors within or not.

Familiar[edit]

Spelling faeries can be bound as familiars, who often handle typos within their spellbook. It grants its masters a +3 bonus to Decipher Script checks. Familiar spelling faeries do not have their aura of misspell.
