This ring looks durable, chunky and made of tough metal.
If you take a blow which would reduce you to below 1 hp (but not against death by non-hp damage), you are instead left at exactly 1 hp. Once it has prevented a death in this way, the ring breaks. The ring ceases function if you have 1 hp/level left, so a 5 HD character's ring will become disabled if they are at 5 hp or less.
