You cast this spell on natural or magical darkness, making it mushy and difficult to navigate. Anyone in the area attempting to move through it progresses at a speed of 5 feet, regardless of its normal speed, and it takes a –2 penalty on all melee attack and melee damage rolls. The thick darkness prevents effective ranged weapon attacks (except for magic rays and the like). A creature or object that falls into ''suffocating darkness'' is slowed, so that each 10 feet of darkness that it passes through reduces falling damage by 1d6. A creature can’t take a 5-foot step while in ''suffocating darkness''.

Creatures inside the area without any mean to see in the darkness begin to [[SRD:Environment#Suffocation|suffocate]] at the start of the second round they are in the darkness, as if they already held their breath. Any spell that allows normal breathing prevents this effect.

Any effect, mundane or magical, that illuminates or dispels the darkness, suppresses this spell too.
